Kwanimation Productions Stop-Motion Animation Group Alcazaren Bros.

Animation pioneered clay animation in the Philippines in late 1989, introducing the stop-motion technique to the local advertising industry, garnering awards both here and abroad. After a hiatus of several years, the group is back, soon to launch a series of new stop-motion shorts on their YouTube channel.

Alcazaren Bros. Animation Throwback.
In 1993 Lintas (now Lowe) presented us with a board with the concept of multiple roles for a single talent. The lead essentially will be 3 other characters. Pre-digital era, we suggested that it may be more amusing if the transformation would be done via a stop-motion technique called pixilation (not to be confused with pixelation used in..well you know). Pixilation involves the animating live actors (pre-Oren Lavie MV craze). We had previously used this in the iconic Royal Tru-Orange TVC with Francis Magalona directed by Raymond Red. In the RTO ad, we animated both Francis M lip-synching and the "Peace Man" necklace he was wearing (more on that for a later post). The technique was popularized by the aanimation legend Norman McClaren who created the Oscar-winning "Neighbors". For the Purefoods spot, we animated a very young Khalil Kaimo to transform into his best friend, classmate and Ate. All in a single take.
We had a special seat so Khalil can stay "registered" in the same spot while we moved his costume changes frame by frame. You can imagine the discipline of this young kid to stay still for minutes at a time so we could do the proper transitions. Wala pang DOLE noon but surprisingly, I don't think we went over 12 hours. We did do a workshop to brief him on how to act like a stop-motion puppet and how he could rest in between movements. Good thing he was very well behaved and an excellent actor!

Throwback Alcazaren Bros. Animation. Found the original boards for a spot we did for RAMCAR Philippines in 1991. Agency was PAC (then all-Filipino -owned). ECD was the legendary Romy Sinson. The concept was simple: to show the car battery powering all the electrical components of a car. We used a combination of replacement animation and good ol' stop-motion for the transformation scenes. This was analog "morphing" (a technique popularized by claymation guru Will Vinton of California Raisins fame)All materials were made of clay. The clay battery was 30-40% larger than the actual size so it would be easier to animate and fit in the replacement models plus, we could get more detail. The lightning effect in the end was cel animation by Philippine animation pioneer Fred Kasilag. Pre-digital days, compositing was done via optical printer, where the cel animation sequence was printed back-to-back with the main claymation sequence.
The original shooting boards were drawn by Marita de Leon. Analog days, we presented the physical storyboards. Wala pang PPT at laptops! And there were no YouTube video pegs haha. We were lucky that claymation was big in the U.S. so many agencies knew what our company specialized in. Today, many clients don't understand what it is and wonder why the movements are "jerky" and texture not so smooth so they end up asking for a CG option (which actually has almost the same production time and costs). Hwell...
Filmex was the production house and Jeric Mariano, the producer. The jingle here is still a favorite although people always go, "Ah yung commercial ng Motolite!" Paktay.
Heres the link to the commercial! Enjoy!

Throwback Alcazaren Bros. Animation. 35 years ago our stop-motion company debuted with our first full claymation TV ad, Project: "Five Friends" for Fruit-tella. Agency was McCann-Erickson. We worked with the incredible creative team of Jigs Javier Robert Alejandro & RJ Celdran. The spot was produced by Chona Sagarbarria-Bustamante with Electromedia as prod house. It took us over 2 months to create an all-clay neighborhood including an apartment row, tree house, jeepney, billboard, the 3 main kinds, a dog and the Fruit-tella 5 friends. We shot for a week in the old Bagtikan studios which became the Industria office. Shooting was from late afternoon to early morning because during analog times, there were no LED lights, so tungsten was very hot and it was summer. We needed to keep the environment as cool as possible so the clay would not melt quickly.
We are soft-launching our new Youtube channel Kwanimation Studios (a third iteration of the stop-motion group). You can watch the full commercial in our special playlist "From the Vault". Sorry the quality is SD but at least we have it archived. Hope you can like, subscribe and follow.

Matchstix n’ Chill? Turn up the animHEAT... kasi umiinit na din. New to animation? There’s no better time to light that fire than now! Also because it’ll take you a while to shoot 24 frames a second.
