As part of a series revisiting Gawad Alternatiboโ€™s past winners, Cinemata community curator Christ Dustly Go Tan presents selected films from each category alongside conversations with their filmmakers.

For this selection, we look back at award-winning animation films and how imagination can become a space for remembering, questioning, and confronting realities that are often left unseen.

From political memory and marginalized voices to family, violence, and representation, these films remind us that animation can do more than create worldsโ€”it can help us reimagine the one we live in.

Pag-Aninag trophy was designed by Ms. Nikki Luna, exhibiting artist and womenโ€™s rights activist.

Created in white, the trophy embraces light as a metaphor for clarityโ€”not certainty, but the act of truly seeing. Like cinema, it invites us to look beyond what is immediately visible and discover what lies beneath.

For Ms. Luna, ๐๐š๐ -๐€๐ง๐ข๐ง๐š๐  is about recognizing stories, lives, and moments that have always been there, waiting to be seen with care. It honors filmmakers who bring these stories to light with integrity and sensitivity. Because to see is also to listen, to witness, and to care ๐Ÿ’•
