Soobin x Yeonjun – Break up (Drabble)

They both sat in the living room in silence, as if breaking that silence tore Soobin alive. To be fair, it does, but he wishes it didn’t– not when the pained look Yeonjun gave him did its job of breaking his heart.

“Why?” He croaked out, steadying his gaze to the older man. The situation was finally sinking in, but he couldn’t find the words to say– what is he gonna say? That he understands and they should part ways? Soobin didn’t want that, heck, he didn’t even expect Yeonjun to initiate a breakup in the first place.

“Did I do something?” Despite the tremor in his voice, Soobin continued. “I know our last meet up had been sour, but I–”

“I’m tired, Soobinnie.” Yeonjun cuts him off. Somehow, the nickname didn’t comfort him like it does. “I wish that it doesn’t have to come to this, but this isn’t working anymore.”

Soobin also wished the sofa was water, just so he could drown himself away from this. But of course, it couldn’t, rarely does his wishes come true– was he always this unlucky?

“It’s always the same awkward and stifling silence. It never changed and we just, stopped– I didn’t feel the spark I– I don't even know anymore.” Yeonjun was looking at him, his eyes red yet no tears spilled.

They were growing apart, that much was obvious to Soobin, but he always ignored that nagging bell– because they were just busy, that it's normal to be away from each other in times like those! But then he gets reminded of the constant arguments, slamming doors, and buried apologies whenever they were together and he thinks, maybe it does make sense. Maybe Yeonjun was right, but it still hurts. He buries his head into his hands, stopping the prickling tears about to come out.

He breathes in and out, looking at Yeonjun again.

This time, he steadies his voice.

“Selfish.”

He stands up, glaring at the older man.

“You only thought of yourself, did you? Leaving me just so you can get out of the situation instead of fixing it. You’re just running away.” He hated the way his eyes started to sting. “Instead of blaming the situation, why not just say you don’t love me anymore? At least make this s**t easier for me.”

Cursing was something he rarely did, so that shocked him even more than Yeonjun whose eyes widened with his words.

“Baby, I–” Yeonjun stops himself, corrects himself. “Soobin, you know that’s not what I mean.”

That hurt. That hurts much more than when he said he wanted to breakup.

The older man sighs as he runs his hand through his hair. “We’re not working anymore– this relationship isn’t working out. No matter how much we ignore the elephant in the room, you know we’re drifting apart and it’s affecting us.”

Soobin wanted to argue, but the words died on his tongue. He wasn’t lying, Soobin knows deep down that their relationship shifted so much throughout the years but he was still in denial, that it was still okay despite its all lows. Soobin really wanted to argue, but he couldn’t– and it was proving Yeonjun right. Blinking the tears away, he sat down, keeping his eyes fixated on the coffee table.

“So, that's it?” He readily returns his gaze to the older man. Yeonjun bites his lips at his question, a nervous habit he has– and he wanted nothing more than to cup his cheeks and scold him for bruising his pouty lips, like he always did. But Soobin relents, opting to fidget his fingers instead, ignoring the urge as he looks away.

“We’re breaking up, then?” He lets the sofa swallow him, yet the weight of this conversation didn’t sink with it, it stayed on his shoulders with a heavy heart.

“I’m sorry, but I think it's for the best.”

Soobin closed his eyes, yet the tears broke past, burning his cheeks. He didn’t have the energy to wipe his tears, he let it be. He lets it be like how Yeonjun wipes it away for him, he lets it be when the man stood up and picked up his bag and shoes, he lets it be when the door closes and silence was the only thing left in his apartment– because everything was out of his control, so he lets it be what it is.
