Jazz Mass Choir

The Official page of Jazz Mass Choir In the 1960s, the Cursillo Movement gained significant popularity in the Philippines. Initially hesitant, Fr.

Originally focused on senior members of the community, it later expanded to include younger generations, leading to the formation of the JR CURSILLITAS. Among its pioneer members was Rey Layosa, who was chosen as the moderator. In 1968, the youth movement initiated a project with two primary objectives:

1. To bring the Mass closer to the people through music.
2. To encourage youth to engage in re

ligious activities rather than spending their time on drugs. During this time, the Church predominantly utilized Gregorian Chant accompaniment in all Masses. The group sought to introduce a new form of instrumentation, believing it would be more appealing, especially to the youth. They chose the guitar, ultimately leading to the creation of the Guitar Mass, later known as the Jazz Mass. The musically inclined members gathered and approached Fr. Louis Thys, the local parish priest, to discuss the possibility of introducing this new concept of accompaniment in one of the four Sunday masses. Thys expressed concern that conservative members, particularly the elders, might not be ready for such a change. After deliberation, it was agreed to conduct a trial run on three consecutive Saturdays, with plans to discontinue if met with significant protests or complaints. Through what was perceived as divine intervention, the Mass was overwhelmingly received and embraced by the parish community. As a result, the priests approved and permanently assigned Saturdays exclusively for the Jazz Mass. Now, after over 50 years of existence, the group remains remarkably strong, thanks to the dedication of leaders who took over after the founders' departure in 1974.

Proud moment! 👏🏼 Witnessed our very own Jay-Ar perform in his first-ever concert with the Madz Schola Cantorum Batch 5 last night!

The BUKAS, NGAYON at KAHAPON concert at the UP Film Center was a stunning tribute to Prof. Andrea Veneracion, bringing together generations of Philippine Madrigal Singers. It’s so inspiring to see Jay-Ar and the Schola carrying the torch—proving that the spirit of music is shared, kept alive, well, and beautifully passed on.
