Did you know that Pilita Corrales began her musical career in Australia? In fact, she was the first female artist to top the Australian pop music charts with her hit single 'Come Closer To Me.'
She is considered to be one of the 'Grand Dames of Victorian Radio and Television' and, due to her status as one of the pioneers of early Australian TV, has a street in Forest Hill, Victoria named after her. Although Pilita eventually returned to the Philippines in 1963 to pursue a musical career in her home country, she remained a beloved musical icon around the world due to her international performances and collaborations with stars such as Sammy Davis Jr., The Beatles, Julie Andrews, and Frank Sinatra.
In 1972, she became the first Filipino to triumph in an international music festival when she was awarded the Best Performer Award at the 1st Tokyo Music Festival, cementing her legacy as 'Asia's Queen of Songs.'
