In this sample, I combined individual subjects to to create a group photo. You may also instruct me to do this by sending me multiple reference photos and telling me where the individuals shall be placed. Smallest portrait I ever made with a mechanical pencil on a piece of regular and roughly a calling card sized paper. Tried my best to capture how my 9 other cousins (on my dad's side) looked with the limited area I had.

If one notices my reference photo, I added and replaced some of my family members with my cousins who were not present. Some live in the US and among them, a few have chosen to lose contact as the family no longer made them feel safe, save for me as I do not wish to take sides and actively try to maintain a relationship with them. I now have nieces from two of those cousins and they're such beautiful little girls.

Sadly, something happened to me in this family years ago that only recently did I understand was tragic and traumatising. It ate away at me for five years that it affected my studies, mental and physical health, and relationships with friends, family, partner. I grew untrusting of the world around me. Like some of my cousins before me, it was best that I distance myself. Though finding love in God again, I mustered up the courage to admit to myself that I was violated and finally tell my most trusted loved ones to gain their support.

The time when my cousins and I got along were one of the happiest I've been, that through this piece, one can see how desperate I was to brush it off and try to keep things as normal as possible. But I know now that whatever happened was not normal, it was not my fault, and having empathy for my family and forgiving them for the hurt they caused me does not mean that I cannot allow myself space and time to heal.

A portrait of me, my younger brother, and our 5 cousins (from my mom's side). Arranged from right to left is the oldest cousin to the youngest.

Unfortunately, it was taken away by my uncle on the premise that he wanted it framed before I could snap a proper photograph, which explains why my eldest cousin was distastefully cropped out.

One night, I was very under the weather when I was called downstairs to see the framed result but I could barely keep my eyes open, let alone move. "I'll look at it in the tomorrow," I said groggily, high on a fever and benadryl. My body was still aching heavily all over but I felt significantly better in the morning, enough to get myself out of bed. I searched all over the house where the framed portrait could have been placed until I found out that it was only brought home the previous night to be shown to me, but not to be given back.

Although it was claimed without proper permission, I grew to greatly appreciate how a mere attempt in capturing the likeness of my loved ones in 2015 could hang so proudly in his office until his retirement. I have improved over the years. Surely another piece of mine or that of a better artist could be more worthy, but it was enough for my uncle and the thought keeps me going to this day. It was the only art piece on there and had the biggest frame among other photogaphs of his family and friends. I was upset at first as I planned for this portrait to be kept in our grandmother's home, but what is art if it was not meant to be shared?

The reference photo of my grandfather was taken when the family visited our late grandmother at the columbarium 40 days since her passing, a Catholic tradition for our dead with the belief that the souls of our loved ones have entered Heaven after roaming the earth.

A few years later, mere days before the Philippines went on lockdown, my grandfather had another holiday in the country and I raced to create this portrait of him as a gift. I had it framed and wrapped. Upon receiving his gift, it broke my heart that I was compared to another cousin whose talent greately differed from mine instead of being recognised for my own. "She's just like X! Oh, it's nice that you were very detailed in the loose skin of my neck!" he said as he kept the frame away. I sat motionless, with a pained smile on my face that they could not tell apart from one of genuine happiness. An uncle craned his neck to see it and remarked, "Pwede na. It'll do," something I almost always say once I finish a piece as I am not satisfied. I brush it off as if I can't do anything more about my work and about myself. I also blamed my rush in making it. Perhaps I didn't put enough love into it, making it less sincere?

I realise now that it was definitely the wrong mindset. Continually push yourself to do better in every aspect of life! A healthy amount of questioning and comparison will also help in determining our motivations, essence of our work, and goals for improvement. Still, it does not mean that we should discredit our efforts. Also keep in mind that not everyone will understand what you do. They may not thank you, they may compare you, they may judge your skills, they may not say anything at all; but these things were not what you were truly after.

My first commission after setting up my online shop. I ended up not getting paid for this piece but it's all right, I understood, and shrugged it off. However, I don't think many other artists would be thrilled if this were to happen to them. It seems to always happen to me, though (am I a pushover or does my social anxiety get the best of me? Oops).

Honestly, it got me thinking if my couple portrait commissions are cursed. Still happy with how well this turned out and I definitely have no regrets.
