Before Filipino folk dances were taught in schools, they were already disappearing.

They were never written down. They lived through memory— passed from one generation to the next, fragile and fading with time.

In the early 1900s, many of these traditions began to vanish quietly.

Then in 1921, a student from the University of the Philippines chose to listen.

FRANCISCA REYES AQUINO went beyond classrooms— traveling to mountain barrios and coastal communities, learning directly from the people who carried these traditions in their bodies and stories.

She documented dances, music, and rituals that had never been formally written.

What she preserved became one of the first systematic studies of Philippine folk dance— eventually taught in schools across the country.

Over more than 40 years, her work expanded. She served at the University of the Philippines, became Superintendent of Physical Education in the Department of Education, founded the Philippine Folk Dance Society, and published works that would shape generations.

In 1962, she received the Ramon Magsaysay Award — a recognition not just of her work, but of what she protected.

Because her work did not just document tradition.

It made it possible for us to remember who we are.

And to keep dancing.
