“Tunggalian”
Melvin Guirhem

The global economy is a wrestle—a relentless grappling for power and dominance among nations. Currency becomes the force that determines ascent or decline, compelling countries to strive, to serve, to win or to yield. It is a contest defined by imbalance, where opposing forces of wealth and hardship shape not only economic standing but the conditions of everyday life.

Yet beneath this struggle stand the workers—the true backbone of every nation. Among them, the Filipino labor force extends far beyond its shores, dispersed across the world, sustaining industries and reinforcing the country’s position within this ongoing contest. Through their labor and the remittances they send home, they help keep the nation afloat amid the pressures of global competition.

Filipinos have come to embody resilience, hard work, and unwavering dedication. In foreign lands, they endure separation and sacrifice, not merely to survive but to uplift those they have left behind. In this great wrestle of economies, their perseverance becomes both shield and strength—an enduring testament that the power of a nation lies in the hands of its people. - Rowell Salulog

“Mapag-samantala”
Edmar Colmo

Born of the soil and raised upon it, the nation’s most essential laborers remain, paradoxically, its most exploited. Day and night, they till the land that feeds a country, yet their own fates are shaped by a system that extracts more than it gives. The cruelty imposed upon this long-suffering workforce lingers in every furrow they carve—an enduring testament to inequity.

Their sun-browned skin, calloused palms, and battered bodies are ceaselessly demanded by the fields and forests. In time, they are rendered into living machinery—transformed into human instruments of labor, their movements mechanical, their rhythms dictated not by will but by necessity. In this slow metamorphosis, emotion erodes, and the spirit, once fertile, is worn thin.

How long must they endure the burdens placed upon them, so vital yet so unjustly compensated? How long before the world fully acknowledges the agricultural sector as the very bedrock of the nation’s economy—and, more importantly, recognizes the dignity of those who sustain it? - Rowell Salulog.

“Four Pee’s”
PG Zoluaga

Bound by a pervasive universal taboo, Putay, Pitoy, Pautwas, Patay remain some of the most constrained subjects of public discourse—especially in societies that claim moral authority. It is often spoken of in silence or judgment, obscured by cultural discomfort and denial. Yet an undeniable reality persists: for many, particularly in poverty-stricken communities, it becomes intertwined with survival itself, shaped by scarcity and limited choice.

In this context, the symbols of coition in the work do not signify indecency, but confrontation—an invitation to acknowledge what is frequently ignored. They reflect not moral corruption, but the complexity of lived realities within systems of inequality and economic pressure. However society may perceive intimacy, a segment of the population is drawn—willingly or otherwise—into this form of labor, navigating it as subsistence and, for some, as a fragile hope for change.

Rather than sensationalize, the work seeks to reveal. It holds the viewer in the tension between morality and necessity, urging reflection on the conditions that produce such realities and the structures that sustain them. - Rowell Salulog

“Crucificados Pelo Sistema”
John Paul Castillo

As humanity strives not merely to exist but to endure, direction falters and clarity wavers. The formative years of a child may shape his future, yet they are themselves subject to revision—reshaped by circumstance: by the quiet corrosion of state power, by the crushing weight of poverty, and by the hollow void that breeds anxiety. Beauty and brutality alike seep into his skin, course through his veins, and chart the uncertain path of his becoming.

Yet one truth remains constant: the necessity of strength—sustaining, unseen, yet ever-present—nourishing the will to breathe, to live, and, ultimately, to survive. Balance, then, is not merely an ideal but an enduring condition of survival. Where there is burden, strength must answer. Where there is weight, it rises—seeking not only to steady, but to perceive the invisible, to feel what lies obscured beneath the very forces that demand equilibrium.

But how challenging it could be to set your path and sense of direction, when you are “Crucified by the System.” - Rowell Salulog

“Abandoned by God”
AR Lasap

At the height of one of the most dreaded pandemics in human history, countless lives were lost. It was a silent devastation, erasing the most vulnerable with an almost invisible hand. Yet among them stood those who were themselves most exposed—the frontliners—often overlooked even as they bore the gravest burden. They stood at both edges of the blade: breathing in the disease while confronting those afflicted by it, an impossible duality, a peril without reprieve. It was a risk they had never been prepared to assume, a burden far beyond what they had pledged to carry. Under its weight, their mental resilience faltered and began to fracture.

“Abandoned by God” evokes a profound sense of isolation, doubt, and emotional depletion. Its muted, desaturated tones deepen the atmosphere of emptiness and solitude, rendering visible the silent anguish borne by those at the forefront of one of the most uncertain chapters in recent history.

But just when they thought they were abandoned, they remained core to this artist’s memory. - Rowell Salulog

“Roots of Ascent”
Jan Michael Tauro

The foundation of every edifice is laid by hands too often regarded as existing at the margins of society. These are the laborers frequently marginalized and overlooked, yet it is through their relentless effort that our homes are raised, our cities constructed, and the very contours of our world take form. Their work, though indispensable, is too often rendered invisible beneath the grandeur it enables.

This work pays homage to those hands that build and sustain our shared environment—workers who ascend, even as they labor at the ground level of creation. Clad in protective masks and immersed in the raw materials of construction, they emerge not merely as builders, but as enduring pillars of resilience, solidarity, and collective strength.

“On This Site We Rise” becomes more than a statement; it is a quiet declaration of dignity. It affirms that progress is not born in isolation, but rooted in labor often unseen yet always essential. Through their perseverance, these workers embody the quiet force that shapes cities and secures futures, reminding us that every monumental achievement begins with the steadfast courage of those who build it from the ground up. - Rowel Salulog
