Museo Kardinal Opens to the Public in New Washington
September 1, 2024
On September 1, 2024, Museo Kardinal officially opened its doors to the public in Poblacion, New Washington, Aklanโtransforming the former family residence of Jaime Lachica Cardinal Sin into a museum dedicated to his life, ministry, and historical legacy.
The opening followed the inauguration and canonical blessing on August 31, 2024, deliberately held on what would have been Cardinal Sinโs 96th birthday. The blessing was led by Archbishop Victor Bendico of Capiz and Bishop Jose Corazon Tala-oc of Kalibo.
From family home to museum
Museo Kardinal occupies the house in New Washington where the Sin family lived for decades. According to contemporary reports, the family stayed in the residence from 1974 until 2003. The transformation of the house into a museum was undertaken by the Diocese of Kalibo, with the support of the Serviam Foundation and friends of the museum.
The project originated in discussions surrounding the preparations for the 50th anniversary of the Diocese of Kalibo in 2026. What began as an informal suggestion eventually developed into a major heritage and ecclesiastical project. A memorandum of agreement between the Diocese of Kalibo and Serviam Foundation was signed on August 31, 2023, exactly one year before the museumโs inauguration.
Preserving the story of an Akeanon who became a national figure
Museo Kardinal provides an unusually intimate perspective on Cardinal Sinโnot simply as the former Archbishop of Manila, but as Jaime Lachica Sin of New Washington, Aklan.
Its exhibitions trace his journey from his childhood and family life in Aklan, through his formation as a priest, his episcopal ministry, and ultimately his elevation as Archbishop of Manila and Cardinal.
Sin became Archbishop of Jaro in 1972 and was appointed 30th Archbishop of Manila by Pope Paul VI in 1974. In 1976, at the age of 48, he was elevated to the College of Cardinals, becoming at that time the youngest cardinal in the world.
The museum also places his life within the broader story of Philippine history, particularly his prominent role during the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution and the 2001 political crisis.
More than a museum of memorabilia
The museumโs collection includes Cardinal Sinโs personal belongings and ecclesiastical objects, including mitres, pectoral crosses and other memorabilia. Its galleries also explore different dimensions of his life, while the first floor includes a chapel dedicated to St. Pope John Paul II, whose apostolic visits to the Philippines in 1981 and 1995 were hosted by Cardinal Sin.
The museum also incorporates a coffee shop and souvenir shop, making it both a heritage institution and a place where visitors can encounter the history of New Washington and Aklan through the life of one of its most internationally recognized sons.
Contemporary accounts described Museo Kardinal as the first ecclesiastical museum in Western Visayas.
A heritage site for Aklan and the Philippines
The significance of Museo Kardinal extends beyond the Catholic Church.
For Aklan, it preserves the physical setting associated with a native son who rose from a provincial community in Panay to become one of the most influential Filipino churchmen of the 20th century.
For Philippine history, it provides a tangible place through which visitors can examine the life of a church leader whose influence extended beyond ecclesiastical affairs into some of the countryโs defining political events.
And for future generations, the museum offers something that archival documents alone cannot provide: a physical connection to the person behind the historical figure.
As Fr. Justy More, one of the projectโs principal organizers, put it during the museumโs opening: โThe Museo Kardinal is our preaching.โ

September 1, 2024 โ a new chapter in Aklanโs heritage
The opening of Museo Kardinal marked an important moment in the continuing documentation and preservation of Akeanon history.
A house once associated with the private life of the Sin family has been transformed into a public space for memory, education, faith, and historical inquiry.
Nineteen years after Cardinal Sinโs death, New Washington gained a permanent institution through which Aklanons, Filipinos, and visitors from around the world can encounter the life and legacy of one of Aklanโs most consequential sons.
