A BIKER CAME TO MY WIFE’S GRAVE EVERY SINGLE WEEK, AND FOR MONTHS, I HAD NO IDEA WHO HE WAS.
For six months, I watched him from inside my car.
Same day.
Same hour.
Every Saturday at exactly 2 PM, he would ride into the cemetery on his Harley, park beside the old oak tree, and walk directly to Emily’s grave.
Then he would sit beside her headstone for exactly one hour.
He never brought flowers.
Never left a message.
Never spoke loudly enough for me to hear.
He simply sat cross-legged in the grass, his head bowed, as if he were carrying a grief too heavy to bear standing up.
The first time I saw him, I assumed he had the wrong grave.
It was a huge cemetery. Mistakes could happen.
But then he returned the following Saturday.
And the Saturday after that.
And every Saturday that followed.
Week after week, this complete stranger mourned my wife as though she had been a part of his life too.
At first, I was simply puzzled.
Then I became angry.
Who was this man?
How had he known Emily?
Why was he coming to see her every week when some members of her own family hardly visited?
Emily had passed away fourteen months earlier after a battle with breast cancer.
She was only forty-three.
We had been married for twenty years.
Two children.
A quiet house.
An ordinary life.
At least, that was what I believed.
Nothing about the life I knew my wife had lived seemed to connect her to this man.
Emily had been a pediatric nurse.
She volunteered at church.
She drove a silver minivan and packed snacks for every school function.
Her idea of rebellion was ordering dessert before dinner.
Yet this biker mourned her as though he had lost someone he could never replace.
Sometimes, while watching from my car, I saw his shoulders trembling.
Sometimes, before walking away, he would place one weathered hand against her headstone and leave it there for several seconds.
As though he were saying goodbye to her one more time.
By the third month, I couldn't stand it anymore.
That Saturday, I got out of my car and walked toward him.
He heard my footsteps but didn't turn around.
His hand remained against Emily's name.
“Excuse me,” I said, my voice harsher than I meant it to be. “I'm Emily's husband. I think it's time you told me who you are.”
For several seconds, he remained silent.
Then he slowly rose to his feet, turned toward me, and looked like a man who had been expecting me to ask that question for six months.
Finally, he said:
“Your wife was my…”
