FIRST PLAY: Kinfire Delve Callous' Lab! (Solo)
"Fun! Was better than I expected. I somehow got the impression that the card play was going to be simple and straightforward. On the contrary, it was much more puzzly that I thought."
Gameplay: a dungeon-crawl derivative in card game form. You have a deck of attacks, spells, maneuvers and in the middle are 4 challenges that you are always able to interact with. The challenge is your attacks are color coded and only work on puzzles, enemies, and obstacles of the same color. Not overly restrictive. But you will feel it hinder you roughly 40% of the game. Best played 2-handed (i.e. running 2 heroes ala coop). Oh and you also roll dice with each attack for added damage making it less predictable.
Eventually you go through enough challenges to get to the final boss. The last fight will use the same color coding mechanisms but the boss will usually be accompanied by 4 henchmen/obstacles that shape the final match.
What's good: The card play was less of a tableau builder. As far as I can tell there are no permanent cards in play. Instead good card play is usually how well you combo and synergize between the 2 heroes (that's why 2-handed is recommended.) So timing, saving your cards, picking your spots are key. Also means you can get incredibly unlucky depending on how enemy cards come out. But hey. That's card games.
What's sus: I'm not sure about replayability. Out of the box you have 2 heroes, and 3 versions of the same final boss (you don't Know which one you get till the final battle). My guess is this was never meant to be a super expansive card game by itself in this one small box. And you are instead encouraged to get the 2 other Kinfire Delve adventures if you want more. You can then mix and match your sets.
Did I enjoy my 1 play? Yes (4/5)
Would I play it again? Yes (4/5)
Do I think I'm the target market for this product? Definitely Yes (5/5)
I like card games, play draft and deckbuilders a lot. So this is right up my alley.
Do I want to own it? Not sure (3/5)
Only because the replayability has got me nervous.
