*QUARTER 3 Description*

This narrates the period when General Community Quarantine (GCQ) was implemented. People were allowed to walk outside and to illustrate this, "walking bass" was integrated. The music began with a chill vibe (due to lighter government rules compared to ECQ) yet mischievously rhythmical to add suspense that aims to convey that Corona virus is still in existence and we are uncertain of when and where it will attack us.

Measures 19-26 carries the hidden code "SURVIVAL" . Indeed, survival of the fittest where we have to risk our lives by working outside to sustain our needs and to save other people (frontliners). Increase in tempo and modulations depict the rise of confirmed COVID cases.

The latter part brings a more violent atmosphere as the numbers of COVID cases was changing drastically and becoming alarming. The screeching sound of the violin imitates the siren to warn us to be more vigilant in protecting ourselves from the Corona virus.

*QUARTER 2 Description*

This revolves around our experience during the quarantine period; beginning it with an eerie sound to mimic fear and restlessness. Played on low register to create a sense of being caged – a “kulob” sound with a lot of tension on notes to instill tension on emotions.

The music is dragging and repetitive to illustrate how we were dragged to do things again and again that made us lose our life compass.

As you continue to listen, thoughts on when will the piece be finished might strike you because there were parts that notes seemed to resolve yet still went on. This describes how ECQ was extended from time to time.

The hidden code encrypted on measures 36-45 is "IMPRISONED".

Part C reimagines the scene when the end date of ECQ was announced. It will be seen and heard how the notes move chromatically ascending while the piano acts as a timpani. This depicts how our emotions were revving up as we approach the day of “freedom” (June).

The last measure indicates the end of ECQ, yet must follow social distancing, which was symbolically reflected in an open harmony cadence.

*QUARTER 1 Description*

Whenever the new year comes, we always perceive it is as a new beginning—excited for new opportunities, goals, and dreams to become better and successful. It was illustrated at the intro of Quarter 1 piece by making it sound magical and dreamy. Subsequently, the next part sets a vibe of dancing gracefully to life’s uncertainties. This music was imagined where all of us are performers on a stage, nervous yet excited for the curtains to open so that we can perform and express ourselves to others.

Part C encapsulates the word for this quarter which is EXCITEMENT —hidden on the piano part on measures 10-49.

The subtle modulation symbolizes that we have eventually settled in the new year and unnoticeably arrived on a new month (February).

Lastly, the piece ended on an abrupt change of color with a dissonant sound to illustrate that our life suddenly changed when the Enhanced Community Quarantine was imposed and this happened in the latter part of the 1st Quarter of 2020.

"MMXX Chronicles"

A piece for chamber music that consists of 4 movements—corresponding to 4 quarters of a year. This new album aims to portray the year 2020 in the Philippines, specifically in the National Capital Region (NCR). This will revolve around how the lives of Filipinos were impacted due to the occurrence of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Each movement will exhibit different styles, colors, and feelings to narrate the unique story per quarter through music. A code is encrypted in each piece; note patterns in each measure characterize a certain alphabet symbol. The word embedded in each piece are terms that would describe the scenario and emotion that we most likely have experienced this year.

HIMIG NG MAG-INA
An entry for the Nayong Pilipino Rhizomatic Interventions Project

The song is about a mother’s love for her child. The child lost his way and abandoned her. She longs to see the child who abandoned her. Tragically, they reunite just as when the child was at death's door. The mother in the song represents our nation (Inang Bayan). The child represents each one of us, who at times, are being influenced by the societal norms, unjust system, erroneous information, and corroded values. It tells us that every decision made for the sake of self-interest (without minding our fellow Filipinos and the nation), equates to abandoning our mother.

This project also aims to showcase our very own Kundiman while fusing it with Pop style.

SHADOW #4

The fourth shadow is a Grandfather’s clock, a pendulum clock.

The story is about an old person—sitting on a rocking chair—trying to begin her journey to travel back time with her thoughts. She will then remember the happy memories which will be shown in the uplifting sound along the piece.

The change in rhythm and tempo symbolizes the piling up of worries and responsibilities brought by maturity. As it leads to the ending, the agitato part illustrates the reversing of time.

The last few measures are exactly the reversed version of the intro, meaning that the old person was brought back into her senses as she was sitting on the rocking choir while the clock is belling.

Title: Shadow #3 - Champagne Flute

SHADOW #3

The 3rd shadow is an object paired to a tasteful liquor—champagne—a drink commonly associated with success.

The piece consists of 3 parts to feature 3 milestones during the adulthood phase, which will be represented by 3 styles of champagne.

I. Blanc de Blancs
Purely made from white grapes. Its purity will correspond to the first milestone as an adult—the innocence and excitement of a fresh grad to get a job. The flowing triplets illustrate juggling of work in the morning and having fun at night. Meanwhile, the walking bass personifies the action of standing up on your own feet and walking towards your goals.

II. Rosé
A pink style made by blending blanc and bit of red Pinot Noir. The pinkish color will represent the 2nd milestone, which is finding your other half and getting married. The 2nd section starts by having the melody on the treble clef to represent the female voice. On the next few measures, the melody will be on the bass clef to signify the response of man. Marriage is not always a happy ending, and as this section ends, the changing in color through rhythm, modes and chord progression tell us the tension and sorrow that happens in a marriage.

III. Blanc de Noirs
Champagne style made from black grapes. The last milestone to be featured here is "retirement" and the black color represents maturity. On the 3rd part, it is evident that most notes are on bass clef and on a full chord. This heavy and smudgy sound aims to darken the ambiance with a low and chill vibes. The piece ends with an unfinished cadence to mark that after retirement, we are going to experience Shadow #4.

Looking at the dark side of the Champage Flute Shadow, the 3 "seemingly" successes are what the society engraved to us as success. It's actually a never ending cycle from one generation to another that after we study, we look for a job, get married & have a family, then drown ourselves to work until we retire. And liquor is our partner to withstand the pain and conquer this phase in life.

So the question is, do you wanna be caged in this cycle?
