National Artist for Theater
May 15, 1938 – December 23, 2015
Teodoro L. Hilado was the pioneering figure in Philippine theater lighting, widely acknowledged as the country’s leading lighting designer and a foundational force in the professionalization of technical theater. Trained under Dom Bernardo “Bobby” Maria Perez and educated at Ateneo de Manila University, Hilado developed a practice that combined technical precision with literary sensitivity, using light as an expressive tool to shape narrative, atmosphere, and emotional meaning in performance.
Over the course of several decades, Hilado designed lighting for hundreds of productions across theater, dance, and large-scale cultural presentations. He worked with virtually all major professional dance companies in the Philippines, including folk and ballet groups, most notably the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company and Ballet Philippines. His designs were distinguished by a philosophy that concealed the light source to avoid glare, allowing performers and stage action to remain central—an approach that elevated lighting from a purely functional element to a refined artistic discipline.
Hilado played a crucial institutional role as technical director of the Folk Arts Theater and later as director of Theater Operations at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, where he introduced systems and standards in lighting and technical theater that continue to inform practice today. Beyond performance spaces, he extended his expertise to architectural and heritage lighting, including historical sites such as the Malinta Tunnel and numerous churches and civic structures nationwide.
Internationally, Hilado contributed to the artistic presentation of the Philippines through lighting designs for Philippine Pavilions at major world expositions in Seville (1992), Lisbon (1998), and Nagoya (2004), as well as for Bayanihan’s global tours. His legacy also endures through mentorship, having trained many of the country’s leading lighting designers.
Hilado received numerous honors, including the first-ever Gawad CCP for Excellence in Lighting Design and Technical Theater (1997) and the Gawad Parangal sa mga Tampok na Yaman ng Teatro Pilipino (2011). Through his artistry, leadership, and pedagogy, Hilado established lighting design as an essential and respected art form within Philippine theater.
