ABOUT THE REPERTOIRE | Sa Kabukiran by Manuel Velez 💎

Manuel Velez’s Sa Kabukiran, with original Cebuano lyrics by José Galicano, is one of the best-known works of the Cebuano musical tradition. The song celebrates the beauty and contentment of life in the countryside, with its lively melody reflecting the joy of rural life.

The song paints a picture of life filled with plants, singing birds, and a sense of contentment. Its bright, rhythmic character reflects the joy and simplicity of rural life.

Sa Kabukiran was originally written for soprano and is associated with the balitao tradition of Cebuano music. It was also featured in the 1947 film Sa Kabukiran, further contributing to its popularity.

On August 29, Rachelle Gerodias-Park performs this beloved Filipino classic at the FEU Auditorium in Manila for MSO's "Opera At Kundiman".

ABOUT THE REPERTOIRE | Ano Kaya ang Kapalaran by Francisco Santiago 💎

Francisco Santiago’s Ano Kaya ang Kapalaran is a kundiman composed around 1938, with both music and text by him. The song reflects on the uncertainty of love and the bitterness that may go with it, asking what fate awaits the one who dares to love.

The work is among Santiago’s recognized kundiman compositions. The National Historical Commission of the Philippines identifies Santiago as “Ama ng Kundiman” and specifically lists Ano Kaya ang Kapalaran among his notable works.

Musically, it contrasts its light, dance-like character with the darker sentiment of its text, creating an interesting tension between melody and meaning.

On August 29, soprano Rachelle Gerodias-Park gives voice to this classic kundiman on August 29 at the FEU Auditorium in Manila for MSO's 4th Centennial Season Concert, "Opera At Kundiman".

ABOUT THE REPERTOIRE | Pakiusap by Francisco Santiago 💎

Francisco Santiago’s Pakiusap, composed in 1921, with lyrics by José Corazón de Jesus, is a plea from a lover asking to be hear. Its text speaks of love that remains steadfast despite hardship, ending with the declaration, “Iniibig kita, magpakailan pa man” (I love you forevermore).

The piece was recorded by Conching Rosal and released by Villar Records International as part of Immortal Kundiman of the Philippines.

Witness this kundiman brought to life by Byeong In Park, baritone on August 29, Saturday 7PM at the FEU Auditorium in Manila, a rare interpretation you won’t want to miss!

This exact copy carries the original signatures of Trinidad F. Legarda (President of the Manila Symphony Society), Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Zipper, Maestra Conching Rosal, and the main cast themselves!
