FEATURE | Written in Fate: When Barbie Answers the Call
In a world where the pursuit of success, recognition, and personal fulfillment is pervasive, some look beyond ambition, yearning for something greater. Many chase dreams of fame, fortune, or the simple satisfaction of achieving their goals. However, there are others whose endeavors are driven not by self-interest, but by a meaningful and intrinsic desire to serve.
Such is the story of Ms. Princess Romea Espigol, known to many as 12-Hagar’s Barbie. At just 18 years old, Barbie’s name has already become synonymous with leadership, excellence, and dedication. She embodies the values of a true Humanista and has left her mark as a journalist. As the Associate Editor-in-Chief of The Scroll Publication, the official student publication of Philippine Christian University-Manila Senior High School, and the Salutatorian of the Graduating Class of 2025, her commitment to her work and community will never be matched.

Princess’s story is one of passion and purpose, beginning in her early years at Pasay City National Science High School—a junior high school known for its emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Despite excelling in this rigorous environment, her heart always leaned toward the Humanities and Social Sciences. When she entered Senior High School, she discovered that her true calling wasn’t in the field of science, but in the world of humanities.
Her journey as a student journalist has been just as remarkable as her academic achievements. Princess is deeply committed to delivering unbiased information and serving the student body wholeheartedly. While balancing the duties of being the Associate Editor-in-Chief and a student, she ranked first in her batch during the 2023–2024 school year, earning the highest honors. However, it wasn’t academic success alone that fueled her drive—it was the belief that she could make a difference, not just for herself, but for the masses.

For Princess, one of the core values of Philippine Christian University—Faith—was more than just a principle. It became the basis of her journey. In moments of hardship, academic challenge, and personal struggle, her faith served as her compass, reminding her that she was never truly alone. It was through this belief that she found the strength to rise, even when the path felt too steep.
Her ascent to becoming the Salutatorian stands not only as a statement to her intellect but also to her perseverance. Behind every recognition were sleepless nights, overwhelming stress, and countless moments when giving up seemed easier. Yet, through it all, Princess—Barbie—found the perseverance to move forward. Her achievements were not simply the product of hard work. They were born of a deep-rooted conviction that her success was never meant for herself alone. It was meant to serve a higher purpose—to uplift and inspire others.
𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗲, 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺𝘀
Maybe it was the path she walked in the HUMSS strand—though it didn’t align with her dream of becoming a nurse—that was meant to be. Maybe the spark for nursing had always been there, quietly flickering. She had always imagined herself helping others, but the calling to serve became undeniable when her little brother fell ill. A week after recovering from walking pneumonia, he was diagnosed with dengue—a moment that struck deep, especially for Princess, the eldest sibling. Perhaps it was this experience, just before her senior year, that ignited a torch within her, making her even more determined to pursue her dream. It wasn’t just a career. It was a calling—a way to serve.
Nursing became more than a personal goal. It became a mission—to serve, to heal, to give. Although it did not fall under the Humanities and Social Sciences, she knew deep down that everything she was learning, every step she was taking, was leading her somewhere greater. With every paper she wrote and every task she completed, Princess wasn’t just preparing to become a student leader—she was preparing to answer a higher calling. Somehow, she knew that all these pieces were guiding her toward a fate much bigger than herself.
Truly enough, one thing is certain: every step of her journey, every challenge she faced, and every lesson she learned has led Princess toward a purpose far greater than she could have imagined. Maybe the path she took wasn’t the one she planned, but it was the one she was meant to follow. The calling to serve, to lead, to care—it’s been there all along, waiting for the right moment to be fully realized. At that moment, Princess knew her future was never just about her dreams. It was about answering a greater purpose—one that would guide her toward the people she was meant to help, the lives she was destined to touch.
𝗔 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲
Princess’s odyssey has not been easy, but it has been purposeful. Her pursuit of nursing is not merely a professional ambition. It is a calling—one that began with the care she offered her brother and has grown into a mission that reaches far beyond her home. Through every obstacle and doubt, she stands unshaken, for her path is clear: to make a difference in the lives of others.
In the end, Princess’s story is not measured in grades or recognition. It is written in the resilience of a young woman who, despite the odds, followed her passion to serve. Her life is proof that success isn’t about titles—it’s about the impact we leave on the world.
As Princess declared in her speech:
“Our achievements are not performance, but rather a conviction—a promise to always serve God, the masses, and the youth—always, in all ways.”
It is this unyielding faith that guides her every step—toward a future where service is not just a duty, but a lifelong commitment.
