Borrowed from the language of video games, "Respawn" refers to the moment a character returns after being defeated or disappearing. In this exhibition, the term becomes a metaphor for the revival of beloved pop culture icons that shaped the childhoods of many. Through art, these familiar characters are given a new life and not merely recreated, but reimagined through contemporary perspectives and the unique voices of the artists. RESPAWN celebrates nostalgia, creativity, and the enduring power of stories that continue to inspire across generations.
Bringing this concept to life, Sean De Dios and Mai Pimentel De Dios, whose distinct practices converge in a shared exploration of memory, resilience, and transformation. Sean De Dios transforms wood into vessels of memory and quiet storytelling, using the natural warmth and organic textures of his medium to reimagine beloved pop culture icons through handcrafted, nostalgic forms. His tactile approach seamlessly collides with the work of Mai Pimentel De Dios, who turns emotion into bold visual narratives. Through her signature "Glitch Art" style, Mai embraces distortion and imperfection to breathe dynamic new life into familiar figures.
Together, RESPAWN responds to their contrasting mediums and their artistic voices offer fresh perspectives on familiar icons. Respawn is inviting reconnection with the stories, emotions, and memories that continue to resonate across generations.
