As we approach Street Fighter's 40th anniversary next year, Capcom surprised us last June by announcing our very own Filipino fighter. I have to say, they really did their homework on this one. Everything from her background and fighting style to how naturally she fits into the game pleased not just us Filipinos, but the entire fighting game community as well.

A few weeks ago, we learned that Capcom was hosting a launch party for the first-ever Filipina Street Fighter, Yasmine. I knew I had to attend; an event like this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our generation. Despite the ongoing typhoon, the event pushed through yesterday. Magically, the rain stopped just for the duration of the event and only resumed towards the end. It was definitely meant to be!

I've met a few content creators and streamers at past gaming events, and it was amazing seeing everyone, especially the Street Fighter community, come together to celebrate. The event was packed with a tournament, photo ops, playable demos featuring Yasmine, giveaways, and raffles. Coincidentally, a player named H1ghscor3 actually won the tournament using Yasmine all throughout! You gotta teach me your moves haha!

Huge thanks to Capcom SEA, Yugen Media, and all the organizers for putting this launch together. Special shoutout to Extra Rai for the invite as well! It was also great meeting creators in the community: Daddy Player One, jccaloy, ivanderzz.gaming, Kervin Dy Sawyer, Kuya Bols, Doby from the Replays, and Kenny Dani. Hope to see you guys again... maybe at Tokyo Game Show?

Lastly, I really hope they host another event when Tifa releases. I can already imagine how massive a joint celebration between the Street Fighter and Final Fantasy VII communities would be! And if there's an extra Yasmine standee, I'm willng to pay. Haha!

Before I get into my small gripes with the movie, let me start with what works. We finally get a genuinely great, street-level Spider-Man movie. While the focus remains squarely on Spidey, we get a brief montage featuring iconic villains from the comics. Destin Cretton’s take on the character feels unique, capturing the authentic pulse of living in New York City. Having visited the city years ago, the movie made me feel the energy of roaming those streets all over again.

I loved Cretton’s grounded approach to the action, from seeing through Spidey’s eyes, to the realistic, loose fit of his suit. CGI is unavoidable in a superhero movie, but here it’s polished and tactile. Between the cinematography and the color grading, the lighting and slightly darker tone felt wonderfully reminiscent of Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man.

If I’m being honest, the movie was a bit too emotional for my personal taste, though I understand why. Peter’s search for identity and his relationship with the people around him drive the narrative forward, and it was satisfying to see his 10-year movie progression payoff. However, my primary issue lies with the antagonist. Without spoiling too much, I just wish Spidey was facing a traditional Spider-Man villain.

While the main villain makes sense for the broader narrative, a street-level Spidey main villain would have elevated the film even further—much like Doc Ock did in Spider-Man 2. Here, the antagonist feels more like a stepping stone to set up the wider MCU rather than a personal foil for Spidey. On the flip side, the MCU guest appearances were fantastic. Seeing the Punisher adapted effectively for a PG-13 rating worked surprisingly well, and this is easily the best version of the Hulk we’ve seen in years.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a thrilling theatrical experience. It’s on track for a record-breaking opening weekend, and experiencing a packed, sold-out crowd (after buying tickets a month in advance!) was electric. That said, I’ll state this with confidence: even after seeing it twice in Barco Laser and ScreenX, if you can’t make it to the cinema, don’t stress, it will still deliver when it hits streaming.

The Filipina Street Fighter arrives tomorrow!

I was really psyched when I heard we were getting a remake of my favorite game in the franchise, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. The moment the rumors started circulating, I immediately applied for the Ubisoft Creator Program. I was accepted earlier this year, but I kept it to myself until the official announcement of Black Flag Resynced.

A huge thank you to Ubisoft for giving me early access to the PC version of the game. As a reward to myself for getting into the Creator Program, I also bought the Collector’s Edition to display on my shelf and to support the developers. On top of that, I was incredibly proud to hear that our fellow Filipino Ubisoft developers helped recreate this masterpiece.

Now, going back to the review itself: 13 years later, this remake absolutely lives up to the original. In fact, it’s so well-made that it could completely replace the original version. That said, even with a high level of polish, you can still run into bugs and glitches. I played the first half of the game on a high-end PC rig and encountered a few game-breaking bugs that were quite frustrating. I know it wasn’t just me either, as I saw plenty of funny clips from other PC gamers experiencing the exact same issues. Eventually, it got frustrating enough that I switched over to the PS5 Pro. Thankfully, because of cross-save support via my Ubisoft account, the transition was seamless. I had absolutely no problems with the PS5 version; it ran at a rock-solid 60fps and looked just as gorgeous.
Ultimately, this remains the absolute best Assassin’s Creed and pirate game out there.

Final Score: 9/10
