Looming

How do we see ourselves after isolation?
Where do we find ourselves at the onset of reopening?
Are we rebuilding or starting anew?

Joee Mejias presents her reflection on these questions in Looming: an audio-visual work formed from a collage of video and sound recordings from the end of lockdown until recent. In Looming, Joee transforms sound recordings to music , and video recordings to projections, juxtaposing recorded material and its physical iteration in a live audio-visual performance.

Ever New (Beverly Glenn-Copeland)

Welcome the spring, the summer rain
Softly turned to sing again
Welcome the bud, the summer blooming flower
Welcome the child whose hand I hold
Welcome to you both young and old
We are ever new, we are ever new

“Sabel” is a dance film inspired by Ben Cabrera’s paintings entitled “Sabel.” The story revolves around a loving mother who lost her children, causing her life to fall apart. Driven to insanity, she kept looking for her children until she ended up in their graveyard. Working on this piece made me realize how distinct each of Ben Cabrera’s paintings is in his “Sabel” series.

“Lakbayin” was derived from two words: “Lakbay” and “Baybayin.” It is about a busy man in the present who travels back to the past. People nowadays work very hard in their careers and are so caught up with their jobs that they forget about giving quality time to their families. As he explores the ways of the past, he leans to keep his feet on the ground and realizes that he needs to spend time with his family more often. For me, Filipino means love for family. Family is the most important aspect of a Filipino’s life. I don’t want to keep this any longer. My name is Mica Burgos. Tara na! Let us all travel back in time together through “LAKBAYIN.”

My loving grandmother was the inspiration behind this piece because when I was a little girl, we would send letters back and forth to keep in check with one another since we lived far away from each other. Sadly, she passed away a few years ago, so I dedicated this output to her, showing the grief that I went through and my unconditional love for her, as she will always be here with me. After multiple revisions, I present to you the final product - my last tribute to my wonderful grandmother, who made a significant impact on my life; “Letters by Baltazara.”
