Honestly i really wanted to play a different deck. But some parts were lost in translation so was not able to get them. so i decided to get back to my roots, BG rock.
The deck is highly inspired by my good friend Justin Malana. I made a few tweaks with adding the F.Core and 2 rexes for more protection and a random 5 mv 8/8 threat.
Based on testing, the initial test was 22 lands, which was really lacking. So we pushed it up to 23. The last inclusion was the Mutable explorer, a new card from LE. The additional ramp and a changeling for annex was really helpful.
I also made sure to be early as part of an ongoing new years resolution, and it really helped. Also made it a point to hydrate through out the event.
Me and the rest of team Gogi was shocked to learn that there were 34 players! Good 6 rounds of mtg fun!!
Round 1 Izzet Lessons (Kamiko) LL
Consented to Lands in front
Unfortunately i wasn't able to test with classic Izzet lessons. G1 was a slog but the opp was able to set up with an early a.talent and later monument.
I really wanted to have a removal for the t4 or so Gran-Gran but it never came. Opp was able to toss a lot of damage through the endurance.
G2 was a really bad flooding situation could not get a leg up at all. fell to 1 monument and copied with a three steps. Lost right after.
I would like to take this opportunity to say my thanks for what a great guy this opp is. hahaha crazy, unhinged and totally genuine friend. Safe skies back to Japan you crazy bastard!
0-1
Round 2 Izzet Looting (Ace) WW
Consented to Lands in front
Next up, another Izzet deck. At first i really thought it was something like a Jeskai deck. but the new borderless art of Steam vents made me think it was a white-producing land. So i really thought i was against jeskai control. When i saw there was a duelist of the mind, i really had no idea what i was up against.
With beats from a demon wall with a counter from Innkeepers talent, opp couldn't do anything. so took a quick game 1.
During Sideboarding i was so clueless on what the opponent was. It was only after the tournament that i realized it was Izzet Looting. haha But really had no clue what to side for. I just assumed Izzet lessons and placed GY hate.
G2 was rather quick as well as i had a T1 elf into T2 Surrak, game was over before i knew it.
1-1
Round 3 Izzet Lessons (Patrick) WW
Consented to Lands in front
Seeing the a turn 1 Spirebluff was another shock to the system. "Izzet again!!!"
Yes 3 straight rounds of Izzet. But we push on.
This was another game where i could really lose if my opp can set up before i do. I was fairly confident because i had mainboard answers to enchantments and artifacts with the Stormbrood dragon so i believe i was just fine. Opp did set up A.Talent and monument, but actually ran out of cards. So with the Knight and a mutable explorer i was able to take the W for the game.
For game 2, i had the same anti-gy sideboard at the ready, vacuums, ooze, additional S.Betrayals. So game 2 i was ready. So we both started the game managing resources. And early Innkeepers talent came down and i was very happy i doded a spell pierce and/or spell snare. There were turns where his grangran was online. Luckily the next turn i had a S.betrayal to answer both threats. Incrementally i felt i was getting ahead as he was struggling to get more resources that i did. Even with a t3 momuement, he did not have a lot of resources left. At one point he casted abandon attachments with no other cards in hand. With his lack of resources, I went to 5th gear and attacked as much as i can to get the life total to zero. I think my opponent had enough as i noticed he started munching on a snack he brought. Haha. He extended the hand.
2-1
Round 4 Izzet Elementals (Jp) WW
Consented to Lands in front
I was able to sight this deck a little bit from the previous rounds so i had an idea for my game plan. Also, the 4th deck in a row that running Steamvents and spirebluff canals! Izzet elementals focuses on dropping a sunderflock and returning all of the opps creatures, really powerful but weird if against opps who play elementals as well. But for me i have no elementals in my list and i just need to focus on killing their crabs or heath elementals so that they cant cast a discounted sunderflock. The card i was really concerned about was the spell snare that they have because my game 1 opening hand had 3 2 manavalue cards. But because my opp (who played first) tapped out, i was able to resolve an innkeepers. then with t3 a surrak. The next turn i tried to push for a demon wall, but got hit for the aforementioned spell snare. Opp was able to drop a Heath elemental which i was saving a removal for. We went to game 2.
Sideboarding was kind of weird for me because i really felt i was overthinking. I was thinking about putting more removal or focusing on putting more gy hate. So i put both. just to ensure coverage.
For game 2 there was only 1 clear mvp, Scavenging Ooze. I was able to resolve an ooze turn 4. i purposefully did that so that i would have mana up to to be able to clear the gy. I also kept up a origins of metalbending just to make sure that the Scooze survives. opp got to 6 mana and i was already thinking that they might go for a hard cast a sunderflock. But the life total was really low already and opp couldn't stabilize. He showed me his hand and it had all crabs and heaths. The Scooze really did a number on his game plan.
It was still a good game and enjoyed playing with Jp! Thanks bunch preee!
3-1
Round 5 5-C Allies (Fitz) WW
DID NOT Consent to lands in front hahaha
I was not totally sure on what the opp deck was. But all deceit was gone when a secluded courtyard naming Allies. haha. I was like.... oh. hahaha. So opp started with the Great Divide Guide which helped ramp and color fix. I did not have the removal for it unfortunately. I placed some blockers in the form of the Explorer and mosswood. But those died quickly to Allies at last. Very potent removal spell especially when youre casting it for a discounted rate. Also by turn 4 opp dropped a Hakoda. I was like. Luhhhh what a creature. I felt that game one was out of reach but the follow up Earth Kind Lieutenant solidified the fact that I was gonna lose game 1. But then a ray of sunshine came out. Opp attacked with the Hakoda. I tossed to creatures on it because it super needed to die. I was in the low life total but once the Hakoda died i took the opportunity and rolled with it. Annex and a F.Core was helping me regain the life lost and when the demon from annex came out it was enough to turn the tables.
Sideboarding was less of a hassle because it was a creature fight so i had no worries.
G2 opening hand was one for the books. I opened with 2 forests, 1 Ba Sing Se and 4 removal spells. Looking at the opening hand i took a little longer to decide. Hands like this for me are always super risky and i am not a lucky person as a default. So this was the riskiest of risky hands. But a voice inside told me "Believe in the heart of the cards" I was on the draw so i felt it was going to be fine. So i kept. Opp started with a land no creatures. I drew, wasn't a black source, and played the ba sing. Opp dropped a land and started with the Divide guide. I was like... oh noooo, here we go. Then, que the Egyptian music. TOPPED DECKED A OVERGROWN TOMB! We actually got there!! Removed the creature and the next 4 creatures. Another surrak came down and with an innkeeper backup was able to drop the life to 0 in a few good hits. Opp extended the hand.
4-1
Round 6 Temur Harmonizer (Paul) LL
Consented to lands in front
I dont want to type about this game. I hate you Paul. Joke lang.
My biggest misplay of the day. I lost because of lack of deck knowledge. I did not know that my opp was Harmonizer. I spent 5 turns developing my board and i was lining up to put him on a two turn clock. I tapped out for a preacher. Then he combo killed me. got 28'ed out of nowhere. I had absolutely no idea what opp was playing as i wasn't able to observe any of his previous games. I was kicking myself because i had instant speed removal in hand and i was at a full 20. Goodness the pain.
Sideboarding was rough for me. I did not have enough instant speed removal to deal with the decks wincon. The one off The End should be enough but I was the most anxious the whole day.
Game two opening was better because i was able to push out an early annex, a little foreshadowing, that annex would eventually kill me. A demon wall got spell snared, the annex demon token was bounced. Also the early llanowar elf and sideboared Sunset Saboteur got caught by a Pyroclasm. Opp played an icetill and i couldn't answer it. When i was at single digits, opp tasted blood in the water. Earthbended a land, sacrificed his two escape tunnels to make the 2 creatures unblockable, and swung with Full bore and spider-sense back up. Died a painful death. Still hate you Paul.
4-2
I was very anxious that i could not get top8. Especially that i have another teammate that got 4-2 as well. So there was a moment where we realized that one of us might not make it. It would really depend on the breakers. When Top8 was called, i barely made it to Top8!! YWEAAHHHHHH butttt the bad thing is ill have to fight another Team mate, greg. Whos using my other deck.
Top8
"Quarterfinals" vs Justin (Dimir Mid)
He needed to go home so free win
"Semifinals" Greg (Dimir Mid) LWL
I did not expect to have an emotional game. Me and Greg are good teammates and we both fight hard when we are serious. Game 1 was very one sided as i had really bad draws. Every comeback i tried was countered, removed, answered. G1 was a massacre.
Sideboarding was fairly fine. Was hoping to get to some Nissas and out resource him.
G2 was fairly fair. We traded resources and made sure that we were fairly fair. The early Sentinel was enough to skew the advantage my way. Opp had no removal for it and it eventually became a 6/7 (eeehhhh memes) opp conceded.
G3 was an early advantage on my end with an early Annex. it helped draw cards. But unfortunately i could only get a singular The End. Timming the opp dropped a kaito. So i Ended it on my turn. saw that he had another in hand. so he drew. My issue was there was a singular Requitting hex in hand. and all the creature i had left were land creatures. I was really trying to play around it. But an end step curiosity was the end of my run.
For some reason Greg was so emotional for this match. He really didn't want to be paired against me. Really appreciate the gesture. (He did end up winning the whole thing.)
Endstep
Over all 4-2 in swiss and reaching "semifinals" was overall a good run for me. Winning is the better outcome but finishing strong for me was good. There was a lot of time for me to prepare and all the nights of theorycrafting and balancing the protection, removal, and the land base. And i am truly satisfied with the outcome. Really happy that Team Gogi was supporting each other and the fact that 3 of us got into Top 8 was more than enough.
Also a footnote it was amazing i was able to get my head in the game WHILE answering judge calls hahahahahahahah.
Giving my thanks to Team Gogi/Topdeck, Ranz (StockUp6), Aaron (Deck of the G*e), and Greg(BorrowedDeck.deck). Also thanks to those that were supporting us in spirit, Patrick, Dave, Jon, Pringles Arnold and Joao. Thank you very much for the support and the gameplay practice.
Special thanks to Justin for the decklist and for the help in theorycrafting. Most importantly for showing me the power of Muta-paking-ble explorer. Thanks so much Tito!
