Man Apologizes for Selling Jersey Featuring Rene Baterbonia Without Permission
A man who sold jerseys bearing the image of the late Ateneo basketball player Rene Baterbonia has publicly apologized to the player’s family and to Ateneo de Davao University after facing criticism for using Baterbonia’s likeness and the university’s logo without authorization.
In a statement, Jimuel Pacundo Cuizon expressed regret over his actions and acknowledged that he failed to secure permission before producing and selling the jerseys.
“I sincerely apologize to the entire family of Rene Baterbonia for selling jerseys bearing his image without permission. I would also like to apologize to the administration of Ateneo de Davao for using their logo without authorization,” Cuizon said.
According to Cuizon, his intention was not to profit from the tragedy but to raise funds that he planned to donate to Baterbonia’s family. However, he admitted that his approach was inappropriate and caused concern among supporters, family members, and members of the Ateneo community.
“My intention was to donate the proceeds from the jersey sales to Rene’s family, and I never meant to cause any harm or disrespect. However, I understand that my actions were inappropriate, and for that, I am truly sorry,” he added.
The apology comes amid an outpouring of grief following the death of Baterbonia, one of the victims of the tragic incident in Dipaculao, Aurora that claimed the lives of two Ateneo basketball players during a team-building activity.
As the university community continues to mourn, many supporters have emphasized the importance of respecting the wishes of the victims’ families and obtaining proper consent before using their names, images, or likenesses for fundraising and commemorative purposes.
