"La garde meurt mais ne se rend pas" (The Guard dies but does not surrender) - a quote attributed to Pierre Cambronne, Viscount of Cambronne
The Imperial Guard of the Grand Army (La Garde Impériale de la Grande Armée) was a small group of elite French soldiers under the direct command of Emperor Napoleon I during the Napoleonic Wars.
The Imperial Guard was divided into several regiments of infantry, cavalry, and artillery units.
The group saw action in the majority of Napoleon's battles, including the failed invasion of Russia in 1812, and the famous battle of Waterloo in 1815.
