Mensa Kids & Teens Explore Filipino History Through Food
What happens when curious young minds meet the rich, flavorful history of Filipino cuisine? You get a day filled with interactive learning, dough-dusted hands, and endless questions.
On October 3, the Mensa Kids & Teens Philippines community, along with their families and guests, gathered for a uniquely immersive experience during the Histolinarya Masterclass: Filipino Food & Heritage Cooking Class.
Led by The Histolinarya Collective by Roberto Villarcabral, the masterclass invited young participants to step away from traditional textbooks and dive straight into history using all five senses.
Throughout the session, food served as a vibrant storytelling medium. Rather than viewing dishes merely as meals on a plate, the children discovered how culinary traditions reflect the Philippines' evolving history, trade, and cultural identity.
The kids actively engaged in every step of the journey, tracing the fascinating historical evolution of halu-halo, uncovering the unique origins and cultural twist behind distinctly Filipino sweet-style spaghetti, and rolling up their sleeves to learn the traditional art of kneading classic, old-fashioned pan de sal.
In true Mensa Kids & Teens style, the venue was buzzing with high energy, spontaneous questions, and joyful laughter. Reflecting on his first time teaching a youth culinary class, Rob shared an insightful perspective that children naturally have fewer years of life experience than adults, yet they deserve equal empathy, respect, and room to grow into the people they are becoming.
This philosophy sits at the heart of Mensa Philippines' youth initiatives. Our goal extends far beyond filling high-ability minds with academic facts, aiming instead to cultivate safe, inspiring environments where gifted children can explore their interests freely, build lasting friendships, and simply relish the joy of childhood.
An event of this scale thrives entirely on the dedication of a passionate community. We extend our deepest gratitude to our host Roberto Villarcabral and the Histolinarya Collective for generously sharing their culinary talent, historic insights, patience, and enthusiasm with our young learners.
Special thanks go to Mommy Yui Ong for spearheading and meticulously co-planning this initiative from day one. And to all the parents, kids, siblings, and friends who showed up with warmth and enthusiasm, it is your active participation that shapes our vibrant community.
As Mensa Philippines continues to curate experiential learning opportunities for our members of all ages and families, we look forward to many more gatherings where our youth can connect with their roots, challenge their minds, and create unforgettable memories together.
Stay tuned for our next adventure beyond the classroom!
