“Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.”

True prayer dos not unite us with God.
It must also reconcile us with the people around us.

So much for the idea that priesthood and religious life is “not for the faint of heart.”
It’s true — but we rarely talk about what that really means.

So much is expected of a priest — often unrealistically.
We’re expected to be endlessly patient, constantly strong, unbreakably hopeful, perfectly loving.
We’re expected to be saints on demand — always selfless, always joyful, always okay.
And God forbid we do something for ourselves — even the smallest reward — because charity and poverty must be “perfect.”

But priests are human, too.

We get our hearts broken.
We long to be accepted.
We walk into sanctuaries carrying the weight of judgment in every homily we preach.
We fear being human — because being human means making mistakes.
We endure harsh criticism in silence because that’s what’s expected of us — whether it builds us or breaks us.
We bear the frustrations of serving under leaders who treat ministry like politics or performance.
And what makes it all the more difficult is that it’s not one or two burdens at a time — but sometimes all of them at once.

The truth is: priesthood is beautiful, but it can also be unbearably heavy.

So please — pray for your priests. And so please pray for Fr. Matteo Balzano, who took his life — because of only God knows what pain, what silence, what heaviness he was carrying.

Rest in Peace, Fr. Matteo

"Maybe this is one reason we have a particular admiration for superheroes: we need people to look up to, to serve as our role models, to inspire us to become more than what we currently are and to find ourselves becoming more like them..."

We welcome this new school year 2025-2026 with soon-to-be-saint Carlo Acutis! Let us look up to him as we continue to journey, hoping that we may be inspired by his love for Jesus and hopeful that we too may become more like him.
