Now on view at the Ayala Museum 2F lobby, “LOLO MARCELO: THE MAN BEHIND THE HERO (Reflections on the Legacy of Marcelo H. Del Pilar)” takes a second look at the historical figure of Marcelo H. Del Pilar.

Guest-curated by Pax Pineda, the great-great-great-grandson of Marcelo H. Del Pilar, this exhibit delves into Del Pilar’s story not just as a hero who spent his life fighting for justice and representation for his country, but as a devoted father and husband who willingly sacrificed time with his family, his health, and his personal resources for a cause greater than himself—a story that still resonates with Filipinos today.

This exhibit is supported by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the NHCP Museo ni Marcelo H. del Pilar.

Anchored on the historic three-year loan of gold objects from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to the Ayala Museum for the exhibition "Reuniting the Surigao Treasure: From the Collections of Ayala Museum and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (2024–2027)," this landmark gathering brings together leading international and local scholars across diverse disciplines.

Convened by exhibition curator Florina Capistrano-Baker, Ph.D., the conference explores:
🟡 Pre-Colonial Philippine Gold — Its historical, cultural, and archaeological contexts
🟡 Material Traditions — Comparative cultural materials and their traditions across the region
🟡 Monetary History — The evolving role and value of gold in the Philippines

Thank you to the over 150 people who joined us last Saturday (Sept 12) for the first in our 3-part History Comes Alive lecture series!

Ambeth revisited the events of the Battle of Mactan based on Antonio Pigafetta’s chronicles and other primary sources. He then rounded off the story by describing the events that took place in its immediate aftermath—fleshing out a narrative that, to many, ended with Magellan’s death.

Afterwards, he examined how historical figures like Lapu-Lapu and Ferdinand Magellan live on in popular memory, highlighting how current perspectives change how we interpret historical facts—and how language plays a key part in perpetuating or changing these perspectives.

He left us with a thoughtful reminder: there are different perspectives on Philippine histories, but these all contribute to one great national narrative.

It’s a great invitation for all of us to stay curious, familiarize ourself with our own history, and stay open when new sources—or exhibitions like “Turning Tides”!—offer a fresh look at what we think we know about our past.
