“Carry On”, a two-man exhibition featuring the works of Joseph Albao and Averil Paras, is now on view at Galerie Joaquin Podium. 🌿
Bringing together distinct yet complementary approaches to visual storytelling, the collection explores themes of being and impermanence, and the sentiments they carry through palettes, patterns, figures, and expressions. Both artists share an affinity for creating fantastical imagery, crafting stories through a symbolist lens where familiar objects and whimsical surroundings take on meaning beyond mere visual appearance—they imply something deeper upon closer examination.
Beginning with Averil’s paintings, his mythical characters and surreal imagery emerge from a complex, personal journey towards healing in the aftermath of loss. Color and form give shape to emotions, memories, struggles, and hopes. A lamp symbolizes a guiding light through darkness; boats evoke the passage toward acceptance and growth; while musicians suggest the possibility of finding joy and sustaining hope amid life’s uncertainties.
Meanwhile, Joseph draws from familiar scenes of the Filipino experience through acts of self-discovery and kindredness. He explores the tension between identity and progress, examining how our roots persist even as we move through an ever-changing world, affirming that progress need not come at the expense of the histories and cultural ties that shape us.
Ultimately, the artists encourage us to look beyond and move forward, all while holding onto the enduring threads that connect us to ourselves, to others, and to the worlds we inhabit. "Carry On" stands at the intersection of remembrance and renewal, reflecting on how the things we hold dear continue to shape us even as we embrace change.
