The City of Smiles is once again turning its lens toward homegrown talent. Local officials and festival organizers officially kicked off the 3rd Bacolod Film Festival last August 3, inviting local filmmakers, writers, and artists to capture the city’s evolving identity on screen.

With the theme “Pag-angot: Celebrating Heritage, Shaping Our Future,” this year’s competition challenges filmmakers to bridge history and modern storytelling.

This stark reality takes centerstage in “Para-paraan” (Finding a Way Through), an official short film finalist at the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.

A Dipolog/Dumaguete drama has been selected as one of the 10 finalists in the short film category of the 22nd Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, which runs till Aug. 18 at Shangri-La Plaza Red Carpet Cinemas, Gateway Cineplex 18, and select Ayala Malls cinemas in Metro Manila.

“Silkscreen,” a short film written, directed, edited and co-produced by Zamboanga del Norte filmmaker and Silliman University political science major Rey Anthony Villaverde, made it to Cinemalaya 22 after recently winning the Silver Award in the Narrative Category of the 6th Montañosa Film Festival.

Actress Daniela “Ella” Cristofani has recently completed The Masters Series: FDCP Acting Workshop for Filipino Talents 2026, signaling an important achievement in her artistic journey.

Organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines, the intensive program provided participants with rigorous training from three of Philippine cinema’s most respected directors.

Two student films from Far Eastern University have been officially selected to the 16th Binisaya International Film Festival. This follows their respective premieres in the All Tamaraws Division of Sinepiyu XVIII: DIWA “Mula sa Lente ng Katauhan” last May.

“Ani” and “Where the Cave Ends” are now part of the growing list of short films from the FEU Department of Communication which made it to film festivals outside the university.

Actress Ashley Lopez is taking a step toward more dramatic roles after completing The Masters Series: FDCP Acting Workshop for Filipino Talents 2026, a 10-day intensive program organized by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

The workshop aimed to refine the acting skills of theater and screen performers through sessions on character development, vocal control and interpreting a director’s creative intent.

Three De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Film alumni recently made a dominant showing in the Young Creatives Challenge Season 3 Grand Finale at the SMX Convention Center Aura.

The national competition, organized by the Department of Trade and Industry under the Malikhaing Pinoy program, honors standout Filipino talent in animation, game development, graphic novel, online content creation, playwriting, songwriting, short story writing, and screenwriting. YC2 provides cash prizes, mentorship opportunities, and pathways toward production grants and festival entries for emerging artists aged 18 to 35.

Mapúa University School of Multimedia and Digital Arts Dean David R Corpuz will premiere his new full-length film "Tayo Lang Ang Nakakaalam" (Only Known to Us) in this year’s Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival.

Directed by Corpuz and co-written with Iar Arondaing, the 110-minute feature drama explores the fragile mechanics of love, grief, and long-standing familial rift.

Manila-based independent actor, director, and cultural worker Serena Magiliw has recently completed the highly competitive The Masters Series: FDCP Acting Workshop for Filipino Talents 2026 hosted by the Film Development Council of the Philippines. This signifies Magiliw’s growing influence as a multidisciplinary artist who challenges established structures of power through q***r and trans narratives.

Magiliw, who studied Filipinology at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, has built a career blending transmedia storytelling with social critique.
