Film enthusiasts gathered to celebrate Philippine Film Industry Month with a retrospective honoring acclaimed director Jeffrey Jeturian at the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) Cinematheque Centre Manila last September 10.

Organized as part of the FDCP’s monthly Cinematheque Director Series, the event offered audiences an intimate look into the director’s impactful body of work.

A recent graduate of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Film program has come up with a new short film which tackles an unwritten set of expectations that comes with growing up, and how these standards often carry an unbearable weight.

“Hindi Pa Nag-aagahan si Tau” (String Bean Boy), the latest film of writer-director John Laurian “Janno” Pelias, steps into the fragile world of childhood body insecurity using the absurdities of elementary school rituals to unpack a deeply personal struggle.

Far Eastern University FEU Institute of Arts and Sciences Department of Communication student filmmakers continue to make waves in Philippine independent cinema as short films “Kahel” and “Lily” were named official selections for the FAMAS Short Film Festival 2026.

Organized by the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences in partnership with REMS Entertainment, led by festival director Gabby Ramos and FAMAS president Francia Conrado, the festival selected the films from hundreds of submissions across the country. The event now awaits the Nomination Night on October 9, followed by the Awards Night on November 11.

Nine local filmmakers have been chosen to receive production grants worth 100,000 pesos each to bring their short films to life for the upcoming 3rd Bacolod Film Festival.

Scheduled from November 27 to 29, this year’s festival centers on the theme “Pag-angot: Celebrating Heritage, Shaping Our Future,” aiming to spotlight Bacolod’s rich traditions, local communities, and evolving cultural landscape.

Audiences in Hong Kong will get the chance to watch Richard Soriano Legaspi’s documentary “Ang Walang Kapagurang Paglalakbay ng Pulang Maleta” (The Untiring Journey of the Red Suitcase) as part of the Migrant Workers Film Festival 2026.

Running from September 11 to 13, the festival brings community-focused cinema to several venues, namely the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Sha Tin, New Territories; KUC Space in Jordan Road, Jordan; and Bayanihan Centre in Victoria Road, Kennedy Town, Hong Kong Island.

Filipino sociopolitical thriller “Silenced Nights” will next vie for awards in the Bangkok International Film Festival from September 15 to 27, following its historic selection as the first Filipino title in the Toronto International Film Festival’s juried Platform program.

Executive producer Atty. Joji Villanueva Alonso confirmed the film’s upcoming selection in the Bangkok filmfest main competition, where it will contend for a $15,000 USD cash prize. Alonso also shared that the project is locked in for two additional European festival stops later this year.

Stories from Negros Occidental continue to find national resonance as Negrense films reach broader audiences. Leading this wave is “Sa Duta sang Kabuhi” (In the Soil of Life), a student-led documentary from Talisay City that recently secured a spot at the 6th Oroquieta Film Festival.

Through interviews with agricultural scientists, local farmers, and community leaders, “Sa Duta sang Kabuhi” highlights the intersection between traditional land wisdom and modern scientific innovation, advocating for sustainable practices to preserve both soil health and rural livelihoods.

Filipino narrative short film “Ang Pagbabalik ni Max Buwaya” has been officially selected to the Diwa Filipino Film Festival in Seattle, Washington, in October, while also making waves in South Asia as an official selection in the Foreign Language Narrative Short category for the 7th Gandhara Independent Film Festival in Pakistan this month.

Set in 1989, the narrative follows Rody (Jun Sabayton), an aging former ring villain who performed under the moniker Max Buwaya during the height of the local professional wrestling era. Rody navigates an isolated existence decades after his peak, relying on his old ring mask for solace as time moves past him. Battling a decline in relevance, he undertakes training for one last bout to claim an elusive championship belt. The film, written and directed by John Luke Miraflor, explores themes of personal identity, endurance, and the cost of chasing an unfinished dream.
