After the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Syria and Turkey, rescuers found a moment of courage under the rubble that broke hearts around the world.

A 7-year-old Syrian girl was trapped in the darkness with her younger brother.

Concrete above them.

Dust around them.

No way out.

But even while she was trapped herself, she kept thinking about him.

She placed her hand over her little brother’s head to protect him.

For hours, she stayed beside him, keeping him calm and shielding him as best she could until rescuers reached them.

In photos and videos shared after the rescue, the little girl could be seen lying under the rubble with her arm stretched over her brother, doing what she could to keep him safe.

She was only a child.

But in that moment, she acted with the bravery of someone far older.

Rescuers were eventually able to pull both children out alive.

After so much destruction, fear and loss, their survival became one of the most powerful images of the disaster.

Not because it showed strength in the usual way.

But because it showed love.

A little girl, trapped and scared, still protecting her brother.

In the darkest place imaginable, she became his shelter.
