Tulos: Mga Tinipong Padpad na Materyal sa Tulaog

Carlo M. Dimaano, from Arts Research and Training Institute in Southern Tagalog, (Artist, Inc.) harnesses found objects such as fallen branches, twigs, stones, and a feather to create a site-specific art installation. This installation which consists of twigs, stones, and a feather mounted atop one another to reach a natural state of balance with the aid of gravity alone drew in Dumagat children and visitors of the Tulaog festival. Before long, some onlookers began to interact with the artist and tried, themselves, to balance the found objects. This highlights the nature of art to become a community effort.

Late Bloomers: An Exploration of Age, Art, and Encounters
WAPAK (Walang Pangalan Kolektib)

April 23 - May 21, 2022
First United Building
413 Escolta St.,
Binondo, Manila

The exhibition frames a notion that one’s discovery of art is not defined by age nor a set background. Artmaking is an innate capability awakened by different rationales and honed by perseverance to tell, communicate and deliver a story. The show addresses art in varying artists’ perspectives and in different stages of exploration. The artists are caught between drives of sending a message and displaying impactful art pieces while the works circle around personal encounters in their art timelines.

The works collectively aim to showcase that different styles, stages, and ranges can become equal. Some of the artists explored the physical properties of paints on canvasses while some delved into how commercial and day-to-day materials could impact a work’s meaning. This exhibition attempts to show how someone’s timeline has no weight when it comes to translating ideas into works of art.

This exhibition is curated by LILAY and Dindo Pilareja.

WAPAK was formed from the UP College of Fine Arts Class of 2020-2021 as they started to talk about their strengths and struggles as middle-aged student-artists, parent-artists, and working student-artists. It was the intention of fulfilling and sustaining the desire to pursue art and creativity amidst current socio-economic and political realities that started the connection among the members.

This exhibit is composed of different works created by members Corinne Fernandez Garcia, Lilay Villasanta Sarreal, Len-Len, Dindo Pilareja, Judith Basco, Ding Royales, Nova Hershey Barbaran, Laura Britt-Fermo, Yana Ofrasio, Yllang Montenegro, Bryan John Pio Gonzales, Anthony Lizano Jandusay, and Carlo M. Dimaano.

Way to go! We are so happy for you, Laura Fermo.

----

Proud to share that the painting “Light and Crystals” by Laura Britt-Fermo was accepted by three different juried international watercolor competitions -- IWS France 2021, IWD Vietnam 2021, and IWS Poland 2022!

This still-life watercolor painting is hauntingly realistic and regal as if the objects in it are coming to life. One can’t help but accuse the artist of sorcery. A hyperbole statement that may be, but in the age of advanced technology where anyone can easily capture a high definition image, it is refreshing to gaze upon an image rendered in a medium that requires precision and patience. The artist also flexed her expertise in the choice of her models to best portray the refraction of light into complex geometric surfaces. At the same time, it gives a sense of ritual space, an effective trinity forming an ikebana variation of height and being led by the delicate pair of objects at the foreground as if tokens of organic existence.

"...the artist gives an alternative form to something simple yet unfathomable that ends up enhanced and therefore appreciated" is what best describes Nova Hershey Mariposque's "Oasis".

Visit Imahica Art Gallery until May 10 to see more of Nova's work alongside contemporary Filipina artists.

As an artist, Nova Hershey Mariposque is fuelled by her emotions, inspired by themes around women, children, and nature, and equipped with the natural talent as seen in the careful rendering of her subjects. Her surreal images are expressed in vibrant colors, just like in her work “Oasis”. The body of water which is usually regarded as a lifesaver in the desert is given a female human face adorned with other life forms inhabiting water. Just like how ancient Greeks humanized the powerful forces and different forms of nature as a way of comprehending its mystery, the artist gives an alternative form to something simple yet unfathomable that ends up enhanced and therefore appreciated. The Oasis is the lifesaving feminine.

"Oasis" by Nova Hershey Mariposque, acrylic on canvas, 24" x 18", 2017. Please check out www.imahica.art or call +63917 894 5646 for more details.
