READ||: Why Yaman ng Majayjay?

It all began when Monsignor Melchor Barcenas invited me to restore the 14 Stations of the Cross of the Parish of St. Gregory the Great. These are paintings hung around the old Majayjay Church and have gathered a thick film of soot and dirt from centuries of neglect. When I initially had an ocular visit to see the 14 Stations, I also went around the church vicinity and was awe-struck by the beauty of the church. For a small town to have a massive and beautiful church like it St. Gregory the Great, I realized how the local people and the clergy gave more importance to this house of worship for the Lord. When I painstakingly restores the 14 canvases featuring the various episodes of Christ’s Passion, I decided to turn over them to the person who took pains to restore the whole church to its original beauty. In addition to the commissioned work,I made a watercolor painting of the Porta Sancta entrance of the church and give it to Msgr. Barcenas as a gift. This began a blossoming of my love for the quaint town of Majayjay. The more often I visit this town, the more I see the gems hidden in it. I saw how beautiful nature is in this town: the waterfalls, the river, and springs, and the mountains. Stories of Msgr. Barcenas and the locals of the town also opened my eyes to its rich history. All these inspired me to create a series of watercolor paintings that I want to share with others so that I can impart all the joy, peace, and love that I’ve felt during my visit to Majayjay. I would like to call this series of watercolor paintings “The Treasures of Majayjay.”

WILFREDO "YEYE" CALDERON

Wilfredo “Yeye” Calderon is a watercolor artist, film maker painting career spans over 30 years. He is a member of the prestigious The Singapore Watercolor Society as well as Siningapor, a group of Filipino based in Singapore. Yeye has shown his work in numerous local and international exhibitions, including Canada, Singapore, Slovenia, Serbia, Indonesia, Mexico, China, and Philippines. Yeye’s work was awarded as one of the five best watercolor paintings in the 11th Kulay sa Tubig Watercolor Exhibition in 1994 in the Philippines. He also won Second Place in the Metrobank Art Design Excellence competition in 1996. Finalist in the GSIS National Art Competition Nonrepresentational Art in 2018, Highly Comended Award in the Aquarelle Pyreneenne France, International Watercolor Masters 2021.
