Concerns regarding ube production as the current shortage of ube seedlings hinders farmers from planting ube. FB scams are also rampant

Purple yam, locally known as “ube,” is emerging as a key Philippine export, gaining global attention as demand for the crop continues to rise, according to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).

Despite this growing demand, ube production has declined. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed output fell to 14,000 metric tons in 2020 — more than 50% lower than the 30,074 metric tons recorded in 2006.

To help boost production, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said it has introduced advanced technologies and propagation methods to support farmers and meet both local and global demand.
