With its deep and vibrant purple hue rooted in Philippine soil, ube, or purple yam, has steadily emerged as one of the country’s most sought-after agricultural exports.
In Quirino, the local ube industry has been quietly flourishing since 2023, when a Japanese client became interested in the crop’s distinct flavor and naturally rich purple color. In April this year, the province also reached its largest single export volume with 1.2 tons of ube powder shipped to Japan alone.
