Current Concern: A Nation Marches Against Corruption
On November 30, Bonifacio Day, a massive, multi-sectoral protest known as the "Trillion Peso March" is scheduled to take place nationwide. This mobilization is a follow-up to a large anti-corruption rally held on September 21 and is driven by widespread public outrage over a major corruption scandal involving billions of pesos allegedly lost in flood control and infrastructure projects.
The protest's name highlights the staggering scale of the alleged corruption, with critics estimating losses could reach P1.9 trillion. Uniquely, this movement directly connects systemic corruption to the life-and-death consequences of climate change, arguing that stolen funds result in failed flood defenses that leave vulnerable communities defenseless against typhoons.
Organized by a broad coalition including Catholic lay organizations, Protestant and Evangelical groups, student unions, and civil society, the march demands deep systemic reforms. Protesters are calling for the passage of the Anti-Political Dynasty Bill, a stronger Freedom of Information Law, and accountability for public officials. The heavy involvement of faith-based groups has framed the issue not as a partisan conflict, but as a moral crisis requiring a collective national response for justice and integrity in governance.
BUKLOD PANALANGIN: A Prayer for the Nation
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with heavy hearts for our beloved Philippines, a nation groaning under the weight of corruption. We lift up the "Trillion Peso March" to You. We pray for the safety and unity of all who will gather peacefully this Bonifacio Day, crying out for truth and righteousness to flow like a mighty river in our land.
Lord, stir the conscience of our leaders. We pray against the systems of greed that steal from the poor and leave Your people vulnerable to storms and disasters. Let this movement not be a fleeting moment of anger, but the beginning of a deep, lasting transformation in our government and society. Raise up leaders who fear You and serve with integrity. We pray for courage for the whistleblowers, wisdom for the investigators, and justice for the victims whose lives and livelihoods have been washed away by both floods and corruption.
May Your Church in the Philippines be a prophetic voice for the voiceless and a beacon of hope. Let this march be a powerful testament to a people who long for a nation where public funds build strong communities, not private fortunes.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
