Children are paying closer attention than most parents realize, and not to the things you would expect.
Eye contact when you listen. They know the difference between being heard and being half-heard while you check something else.
Putting your phone away. It is one of the clearest signals of where your attention actually is, and children read it accurately every time.
Hugs that last a beat longer than the automatic ones. Hearing I'm proud of you, said plainly, not implied.
Gentle corrections, not sharp ones. The lesson lands the same either way. Only one version teaches them that mistakes are safe to make around you.
Bedtime stories, even the ones you have read forty times and could recite from memory.
Promises you keep, especially the small ones. Small kept promises build trust faster than any single grand gesture.
Laughing at their jokes, even the ones that are not actually funny yet.
Comfort when they are sad, offered without rushing them toward being fine again.
Noticing their small victories, the ones nobody else would think to mention.
Listening without rushing them to finish the sentence for them.
And believing in them, quietly, in the ordinary moments where it counts more than the ones anyone else would see.
None of this requires more time than you already have.
It requires the time you already have, given a little more fully.
