GIS Basics 💡 | Technical Description Workflow in QGIS

Sharing a QGIS workflow for generating Technical Description-ready data, including bearing/ direction and distance calculations, using a custom QGIS Processing Model.

You can try the model and compare or validate the generated results with the COGO Tool in ArcGIS/ ArcMap, especially the bearing and distance calculations.

For those who want to try the model, the link is provided in the comment section. If you notice any inconsistencies, please feel free to send screenshots so we can check and improve the model, particularly the bearing calculations.

Disclaimer: This workflow and QGIS model are for demonstration purposes only. They are not intended to replace an official or legal survey process. Always validate the results against applicable surveying standards before using them for actual survey-related work.

What Happens When Hazard Data Meets Exposure Data?

We already have our hazard data. Now, let’s add population data to see how many people may be within the hazard zones around Mahagnao Volcano.

We used a 30-meter resolution population raster dataset to estimate the number of people who might be affected in the event of a worst-case Pyroclastic Density Current (PDC) or eruption scenario.

Based on the data used in this demo, the estimated population that might be affected is 63,253 within the High PDC Hazard Zone and 509 within the Moderate PDC Hazard Zone.

What’s next?
Population per Municipality.
See how many people may be exposed within each municipality based on the hazard extent.

Disclaimer: This demonstration is for educational purposes only. The hazard extent and population figures are based on the datasets and methods used here and should not be considered official hazard or population statistics.
