CAG spearheads Webinar-Workshop on Effective Lesson Planning to BSE III Eng

As an alumnus of the college, Rowell Esteves, former English Major, shared his knowledge on how to write an effective lesson plan to third-year English majors last Thursday, April 8, 2021, through a webinar sponsored by Communication Arts Guild (CAG) held virtually on google meet.

"A teacher is not a teacher if he/she does not know how to write a lesson plan," said Jonathan Corpuz, CAG president, as he welcomes his co-students in the webinar.

Esteves added that he, himself, faced and is still facing struggles in making lesson plans yet there is a need to master it as it serves as a roadmap to teachers on how they would go about in their discussions.

Further, Esteves shared a wonderful skill - Unpacking a Competency. Esteves featured his personal unpacking methods that truly helped the participants in formulating SMART objectives/learning outcomes. "The objectives part is the hardest, but through sir Rowell, I was able to have a vision of making truly SMART objectives," said Archie Blas, one of the participants.

Moreover, Esteves also shared his experiences making a lesson plan, both as a SEA teacher and as a student-teacher at MMSU Laboratory High School.

When asked about his tips on how he makes his lesson plans, "Don't procrastinate," he simply replied. "Lesson plans not only prepares you in the course of the discussion, but it also helps you gain confidence in teaching," he added.

Success in Solitude

Stories of independence are the mainstream high spot of his younger self, but vengeance was never his payback to them.
“What can we do? That’s life.” He turned to his laptop and started discussing the topic. To be honest, it was only fair we had one hour and thirty minutes under him because he would rant and vent out to us about the things that stress him from work. “Now,” he said loudly and I was startled. I quickly opened my notebook, ready to take down some notes. He talked about the topic for today but his expression was somewhat off. “To be honest,” he started again and he was venting out. Again. I listened to him as if he was only talking to me. We took his words personally because he seemed tired. I looked around the room and realized they were all doing the same. I placed my pen beneath the pages of my notebook. Okay. Now I’m listening to him.

In his class, it would be as silent as a church. We would listen to him talk and answer some questions he asks. One time though during our class, sadness was evident in his eyes. He stood in front and started sharing. He talked about a young man who didn’t get enough attention from his parents. He lived self-sufficiently and reached his dreams deliberately. He moved forward towards more massive success. He trusted the process and soon, he bloomed! Little did we know that the young man in his story was him.

We were truly shaken. Our guiltless minds were suddenly surprised by how his hideous story turned into a lovely avenue where we can learn and explore the real meaning of life despite the challenges we face each time. Indeed, a teacher who knows the struggles of life will teach his students to instill the love of learning in their hearts.

The next journeys of our lives were welcomed and catered by his words of wisdom. The wisdom that even if we were only in the beginning, he has marked our lives until the end. Unbeknownst his hardships, he spoke as if he had the warmest family and the life in which he has nothing to worry about. Only when he spoke of his past that we understood how our course is shaped by how we react to it. He was tossed here and there to give himself an education. He provided for himself, he clung to people he was not related to and made a family out of the broken home he had found. He ventured his way to success even when life offers him the least. He made sure that whatever life offers, he would turn it into greatness. He lived by the words of doing things on his own yet he never owned what he has earned.

Even though he held on to a different home he never turned his back completely to the home that gave him the opportunity to be alive. The home that made him live and the home that made him alive was the same to him. He treated them fairly. Even when they had the least contribution, he would give his utmost love and provide them as if he owed them everything he had. He never forgets, and never commits acts of revenge. He redefined home held it to its prior meaning.

The brokenness is not evident for he has made people around him whole; caring and motherly giving advice to whoever seeks his company. He shaped and influenced lives as if they were his to live. Encouragement and guidance were all he gave even when he lacked that himself. It is as if he has earned every inch of courage and guidance to be able to provide everyone he meets. His loving hands have indeed touched many lives and he earns trust and friendship in return. He has directed people to courses they were tireless of.

Hundreds of thousands of lives he may have rippled his strength and perspective in life too. He made his love multiply through people and also, through plants and nature.

BALANCED HEADMASTER

He is the right amount of everything.

Some might say that having an intimidating and strict teacher is quite a thorn while having a consistent funny teacher always brings joy--hence the ‘good’ one. There is nothing wrong with aiming for that instant joy, but we might as well learn early on in life that at times happiness comes disguised. To be nurtured by a strict teacher is not always a curse; sometimes it is a gift we tend to overlook.

“He is intimidating yet he has an inspiring personality.”
“Super strict, passionate, ken worthy lessons.”
“There is always pressure, but I like how the way he teaches us kase ado maadal ko.”
“Terror but later on agpakpakatawa isu mayat balance la.”
“Medyo strict ngem ammu na makisama estudyante na detat na oberve ko kanyana.”

These lines came from different people, yet something common binds them all together.

BALANCE.

Those adjectives may come first, but we will always remember to save the BEST for last.

He corrects when he sees something wrong. Harsh as it may seem to others. But we see it as an immediate response to the need for education. We see that he does not limit learning to the four corners of the classroom. Thus, he teaches the correct from errors made by students. And this is just how he is. Direct and balanced, yet passionate and emphatic.

Professor Gerry, thank you for being the right amount of everything. Thank you for reminding us to always run the extra mile. Keep being the ‘Sir Abad’ that everybody knows. All your methods and teachings will eventually let your students realize that there is more outside the classroom, and what you've shown to us is just an inch of it.

Hogwarts doesn't have a BALANCED HEADMASTER, but CTE surely does.

The Authentic Lover

If someone would describe her, ‘best’ would be the perfect word. She has proven her worth not only in the debating and other oratorical contests but also as a loving and caring teacher to her students.
She is only one of the few teachers who carry only a laptop and LCD projector to class. No books nor other aesthetics. Plain laptop, that’s all. But she is no way plain. When she starts the lesson, she does not even look at her laptop, nor the projected screen. Everything just came out of her mouth. Every bit of knowledge just goes out of her mouth. But what is amazing about it is that all the stories and all the lessons, despite being lengthy, is not tiring at all. Rather, you are mesmerized by her voice. You are mesmerized listening to a caring mother sharing history, stories, and personalities of literature. She never misses any important detail of the lesson despite not reading to any book, nor looking at the screen.
But what is more alluring about her is her motherly nature. She knows when one is down, and she adjusts to cure that sadness. And no day, either a lecture day or an exam day, with her, is ever dull.
During an awarding ceremony, she was passing by when her advisory class, BSEd English 1-A was announced as the overall winners of the program, she was one of the proudest. It was an authentic pride towards us that was seen in her face. She waited until the end of the program to officially congratulate us, recognize our efforts, and reminded us to do better and surpass our current selves. But she was not only proud of our victories, she was also proud of our defeats. She would remind us that sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. That we need to learn from the defeat and come back bigger and better.
Our classes with her might have been a short Laoag-Pagudpud-Laoag motorcycle ride, but it was a ride worth reminiscing. And even when we don’t have classes with her anymore, the authentic motherly love, and the continuous reminder that we should come back from any downfalls is always there. She never misses sharing a smile and laughter in hallways. She never misses showing her pride for us as her children.

To One Untraded Gem

It was a stance to behold how one would have captured a myriad of souls in her single heart. Without a day that passes by, selflessly highlighting the goodness of others. Of putting them first before hers, of always pushing themselves to the limits, and of feeling the proudest for their spotlights; that was the kind of core this personality has.

If one could just invoke competence and compassion in a single note, she could have been one in the topmost list. Her demeanor makes it undeniable that she has been going well with the tides of the noblest profession. For, in fact, she always has a distinct way of innovating teaching in the sustenance of the diverse minds looking upon her. As such, the mantra that “No one should be left behind” had been long applied in her teaching.

This Pandemic had presented the greatest challenges to all teachers who are not innately fed with the ‘digital literacy’ in the mouth. Yet, like most teachers are, she courageously took the challenge of crossing the line in departure to the old way of teaching. The shrugging off all inhibitions is faced in order to continue rendering the best of education to all learners. With that, we can never be proudest for all of her efforts equal to all other teachers.

Despite the errands that this institution had called her to do so, she enthusiastically and wisely accomplished it all. She always shot her arrow and strands it to her best shot. We would not dare to state that she really is one of the best assets of this institution.
If we could just be in a shop of luxuries, surely, she is one of those rarest gems that could emanate the brightest strikes of sparks. A gem for she knew it herself that she is more than blessed. For it is with her profound acknowledgment to the greatest Art Curator that she believes she owes it through.

However, this gem is exceptional for she never uses her sparks to dim the lit of others. Rather, she uses this to brighten the entirety of the room she was displayed along. Making the whole place feel happiness, belongingness, and glorifying feeling. She was that approachable gem you could always come nearer to without hesitation. This gem, our gem we would never trade-off, is no other than Dr. Jahnese D. Asuncion.

Although, it was disheartening to know that we can no longer see her physical smiles and witness the endearing motherly gestures contain in the classroom set-up due to this pandemic. The hallways intersected through her office that once pictured those enthusiastic moments of students and teachers paying reverence towards the latter. Nevertheless, this Pandemic did not take all of these opportunities away. This Pandemic has even made greater the anticipation of finally going back to ‘normal’ to be with more of our institution’s gems once again.

Success from Passion
There are many parallels between life and being a professor in terms of the journey, the mystery, and the spirit. People say that life is a mysterious journey with unpredictable outcomes. But, the human spirit creates and orchestrates ways in overcoming its challenges and achieving specific goals whatever they may be. Being a professor is a journey in life that starts with the spirit of gaining new insights, adding new or alternative dimensions to the existing body of knowledge, and achieving a lifelong passion. As time passes by, the mystery and the uncertainties of the journey intensify only to finally, somehow come together in the shape of education. This does not happen by accident or by a miracle, for it is a result of hard work, perseverance, support, dedicated guidance, encouragement, and cajoling of a supervisor. Now, in this area of teaching comes one man named Ronald Candy Lasaten who could pretty much be described by thousands of positive adjectives present in dictionaries. Known for his intelligence, knowledge, dedication, and passion for the profession, he is also an ultimate bagger of achievements and promotions, which made him quite the successful man he is today. In a small article like this, his achievements are too big and are too many to be mentioned. But, in honor of the name that he has built with walls of achievements, it is just right and necessary for his achievements to be known by many. So, Professor Lasaten is a graduate in MMSU-CTE, where he is working now as a professor. Before he entered as a professor in CTE, he became a teacher at Holy Spirit Academy.
Eventually, he earned his doctorate degree at such a young age, proving that he is an exceptional person. Aside from his achievements, what really makes him a great person are the characteristics that he has... the characteristics that he is not afraid to show. First, he may not look like it, but he is one of the kindest professors who have ever set foot in the College of Teacher Education. In his busy weekly routine (except Wednesday), he is seldom seen smiling in public. Thus, people who think that he is strict cannot be blamed in any way for thinking that he is coated with a terrorizing and intimidating aura. But, his real kindness could disprove those impressions. His kindness is defined by how he extend deadlines, and also by him being considerate of his students’ shortcomings. Aside from that, he is a very proud professor when it comes to his students’ accomplishments. He would always display the brightest and proudest smile whenever the English Department graduates hit 100% on BLEPT. His students’ accomplishments are his pride and joy, which is more than enough reason for him to continue assisting students in their progress. And, although proven to be strict, his strictness does not really speak up for his attitude and personality. He is strict, but he does not let his soft side fade. He is strict, but for a good reason. Second, he is not just a professor with a powerful voice, but he is also a possessor of "the golden voice". A golden voice, which he uses when singing. Although he is not displaying his extraordinarily rare and unexpected talent in the class, people who pay close attention to his voice know that he could match the massive performances of Lea Salonga and Lani Misaluca.

With that, he has created a “what if?” question for people to ponder and wonder. “What if he pursued a singing career over teaching?” The answer is simple. It would be harder for the English Department to have the 100% BLEPT passing rate, because his presence, along with the other professors' efforts and the hard work of the examinees, is a great help to the College of Teacher Education’s achievements.

Perhaps, another reason for such a milestone could be his “golden voice”. Who knows? Maybe he is singing while helping the examinees focus for the exam, and his voice is the little magic that blesses everyone’s ears, giving them the strength to pass? That’s also a good possibility to consider why CTE is on top. And lastly, he is a human alarm clock, and this thing about him is his trademark because, in his favorite tranquilizing air-conditioned room, his students find comfort… comfort that is enough to make them sleep. The feels and comfort being brought by the aircon is really enough to put billions of brain cells go to sleep. But whenever the sleeping virus tries to disrupt his well-orchestrated discussion and the attention of his students, he will always break the ice with his powerful voice, hilarious jokes, accompanied by an unreadable facial expression.

While his jokes are the funniest, it is also funny how the energy being released by the aircon make students feel the urge to sleep, while the energy in his voice that he releases is enough to deflect the air conditioner’s effect, the reason for him to always successfully awaken the souls of his students. Sometimes, it is really worth wondering if he and the aircon are good friends or rivals?
As for the conclusion, it is never new that this field is an exciting journey that contains not just the mastery and production of knowledge but an utterly life-changing experience both for the students and professors. Teaching is never easy for it has no specific criteria. That is because teaching is the criteria itself, starting from the wits, competency, talent, strategy, and the list goes on. These are the things that make the professor mentioned in this article as walking evidence of dedication and undying passion.

The field itself contains a lot of tidy journeys that would continue to sail even until his vision blurs. But, the scene he's putting up in front of his students is not even close to the picture of giving up. His vision might blur, but his tenacity will make him carry out his mission until his visions and ideals are fulfilled. There is a question when it comes to his dedication. The dedication that made him a valuable piece of CTE's success through the years.

With his genuine personality and his visible and true colors, a similar demeanor of him to his students and colleagues was built. The kindest professor with an intimidating mask on fleek; a professor with a golden voice that can make Leah Salonga's head turn; and a human alarm clock who wakes up brain cells and souls with his extraordinary strategies -- a man with the kindest heart, golden voice, and an energy source.
