Pic O7: Ilocos Sur – Why does Ilocos have so many churches?

Churches of Candon, Cervantes, and Sta. Cruz

Because Ilocos wasn’t just shaped by time—it was shaped by faith and colonization.

When the Spanish arrived in the 1500s, they brought Christianity with them. Led by Augustinian missionaries, they established towns and built churches in almost every community—not just as places of worship, but as centers of governance, culture, and daily life.

Many of these churches, like those built in the 1600s–1700s, became mission centers where locals were gathered, converted, and organized into new settlements.

That’s why Ilocos is filled with centuries-old churches—each one standing as a reminder of Spanish influence, deep-rooted Catholic faith, and the history that shaped the Ilocano identity.

More than just structures, they are stories carved in stone—of belief, colonization, and resilience.

Reel 04: Amburayan River, Kapangan – A Place Shaped by Colonial History

The Amburayan region was once an official administrative district during the Spanish colonial period, established in 1890 to govern upland communities. It was mainly inhabited by the Kankanaey people and later became part of Benguet, La Union, and Ilocos Sur. This history reflects how the river basin was not only a natural resource but also a center of governance and cultural identity.
