Still We Rise: Elegance Rooted in Heritage

For the past two years, I’ve sculpted stories of Moro women—resilient, regal, and rooted in tradition. Though art like this may be difficult to market, perhaps weighed by lingering stigma toward Mindanao, I continue to shape each figure with conviction. Through every curve, color, and ceremonial gesture, I’m honoring our culture and offering the world a glimpse into its grace and depth.

This sculpture is a reflection of my continued exploration into the visual language of Maranao heritage. Through the interplay of form, textile, and symbolism, I sought to translate the complexity of landap weaving and the fluid geometry of okir into three-dimensional space.

The process of sculpting each pleat and motif demanded both technical precision and cultural introspection. Landap, with its vibrant hues and layered patterns, became more than fabric, it became structure and storytelling. Okir, in its rhythmic flow, challenged me to paint with intention and reverence.

This work embodies not only the strength and grace of Maranao identity but also my ongoing commitment to preserving and reimagining tradition through contemporary expression.
