"Kapemalo-Malong"
This sculpture embodies the vibrant grace of traditional Filipino dance, captured in a poised yet dynamic moment frozen in time. The lifted arm, the flowing lines of the draped skirt, and the subtle tilt of the foot all create a sense of movement — as if she is mid-step, inviting the viewer to witness a fleeting dance passed down through generations.
The bold color palette — a rich combination of luminous blue, warm pinks, and intricate bands of vivid embroidery — reflects the celebratory spirit of indigenous attire. The hand-painted patterns are inspired by Landap, highlighting the heritage woven into every fold. The shimmering headdress and delicate jewelry add a regal touch, reminding us that these dances are not merely performances, but living stories of identity, pride, and artistry.
In this piece, I wanted to honor not just the beauty of the dance, but the energy within it — the gesture of the raised hands, the confident stance, and the elegant flow of color come together to keep our culture in motion, even when standing still.
