𝐎𝐤𝐤𝐨𝐲𝐨𝐲!

The Kidapawan iteration of Tagum artist Pinta de Baryo's Akoy-Akoy Series celebrates Monuvu culture.

The expression 'okkoyoy' has made it into Kidapawan Bisaya (with many speakers not knowing it is actually Monuvu), but this expression (along with its variant, 'okkoy') has a long history, and appears in Monuvu Pongumanon (traditional stories).

In more recent history, the expression has assumed a discriminatory connotation, having been used by Settlers to mock the Monuvu.

There has been moves of late to undo this and to give new value to the expression - one of few Monuvu cultural elements to enter the Kidapawan mainstream - and the Masbad Gallery hopes to play its part in that process.

We are very proud of this painting by Talaandig soil artist Adriel Galleposo!

It is made entirely of soil - Ading is one of the most talented of the youngest generation of the Talaandig soil painters of Lantapan, Bukidnon. He learned directly from the movement's founder, Datu Waway Saway.

Even the greens and blues are soil!

The hands in the painting spell out the painting's title - 'Apao'

Apao is the name of the semi-legendary ancestor of the Monuvu clans of upland Kidapawan, believed in oral tradition to be the first person to climb Mt Apo.

Although coming from Talaandig country, Ading pays homage to Kidapawan's indigenous culture, with the hand-headed figure wearing the Monuvu umpak.

Ading's time in Kidapawan helping Jhonrey Balane with the Masbad Mural has been a learning experience for him, and this painting is a result of that.

The Masbad Gallery celebrates Indigenous Peoples Month along with Museums and Galleries Month, showcasing the meeting of cultures in Kidapawan and fostering innovations in tradition.

𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐏𝐞𝐨𝐩𝐥𝐞'𝐬 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐛𝐚𝐝 𝐆𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐲!

The Masbad Gallery is home to artworks by several IP artists, and in celebration of Indigenous People's Month, we feature their works!

This time we feature Elviz Goloran, who is of Tagabawa and Mandaya descent.

Elviz, who is currently based in Tagum, has roots in both Davao City and Davao Oriental. This emerging top artist is still rediscovering his indigenous heritage.

Some of the iterations of 'KidaKIDS' - his series for the Masbad Gallery - feature Monuvu characters, a culture very similar to the Tagabawa.

Come and see KidaKIDS and other Indigenous art for free at the T&A Madriguera Bldg!

The head curator of Mindanao Art and head of the Davao City National High School's Arts and Design Program is one of the Masbad Gallery's resident artists

Jeff spent part of his youth in the Greater Kidapawan Area, with his family being among the pioneering Settlers in Arakan. The two paintings he shared with the gallery are about his memories from his childhood there.

Gallery-scouting?

Tagum artists Rey Ursabia and John Paul Senangote and Samal artist Jushua Rotante drop by the gallery for Timpupo

These three have been all over the place, winning competitions and with their works put on show all over the country.

Maybe Kidapawan is ready for them too!
