Last Monday, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Midnight Killer Earthquake in Lebakโone of the most tragic and unforgettable chapters in the history of our municipality and our province.
Fifty years ago, in the darkness of the night, a devastating earthquake struck and changed countless lives forever. Families were lost, homes and communities were destroyed, and an entire generation was left with memories that would never fade.
Yet from that tragedy emerged a story of courage, unity, and resilience.
Together with Governor Datu Pax Ali, we honor the survivorsโour elders, families, and fellow Lebakeรฑos who endured the pain and hardship, stood strong, rebuilt their lives, and continued to move forward.
The Tsunami Marker stands as a symbol of resiliency for each and every Lebakeรฑo. It is not merely a landmark, but a living reminder of the lives lost, the survivors who remained strong, and the generations who rose from the tragedy.
More importantly, the marker serves as a reminder and warning for future generations. It preserves the memory of what happened and reminds us that communities must always be prepared, vigilant, and united in the face of earthquakes, tsunamis, and other disasters.
It reminds us that while disasters may test the strength of a community, they can never defeat a people who choose to stand together.
We remember those who were taken from us.
We honor those who survived.
We salute those who rebuilt.
And we inspire the generations who will carry the story forward.
Fifty years later, Lebak continues to rise.
From tragedy came strength.
From loss came courage.
From darkness came hope.
