Anza Palma | Molo, Iloilo

For Anza Palma, her biggest takeaway from Linangan sa Iloilo came from mentor Charlie Co, who emphasized that artists must take care of their health and well-being. His message was clear and powerful: how can you enjoy the fruits of your labor if you’re not alive to experience them? You should enjoy what you do while you’re living.

Anza sees the artist’s role as expressing not only themselves but also the emotions and ideas of their time and the people around them. Through her self-expression, she gives awareness to her community and connects with people who feel and think as she does. For Anza, art is a bridge between personal truth and collective experience.

Yzah Martina Calunsod | Molo, Iloilo

The most important lesson for Yzah Martina Calunsod was to create art for herself first and foremost—not to create art that caters to society or for society’s approval. She cites mentors Cezar Arro and Mark Justiniani, who taught her to balance creating from the heart and creating with the mind. When you create, your first audience is yourself. The first person you have to please is yourself. You have to feel pleasure and fulfillment in what you do.
Looking to the future, Yzah sees herself creating art—whether through writing, painting, or drawing—that somehow voices the wants and needs of the community she is part of. She hopes that one day she can also share her art and her knowledge with future generations, passing on what she has learned through Linangan to those who will come after her.

Jheane Borja | Cebu City
For Jheane Borja, Linangan gave her a broader context to see herself as an artist. The program emphasized the importance of interacting with fellow artists—she got to see and connect with artists in Iloilo and from other provinces across Visayas amd Mindanao. This gave her a wider understanding of how resilient artists like herself are creating and defining themselves in the region.

Jheane sees these interactions as essential for making her more conscious of who she is as an artist and creative, as well as who her peers are—other artists she can look up to and refer to as part of her regional community. Her main takeaway from her mentors in Linangan was their extraordinary generosity. She was deeply touched by how each mentor kept talking about what they can give back to their communities, especially those who have achieved success. Their commitment to sharing opportunities and growth with fellow artists left a lasting impression on her.

Julia Borja | Cebu City

Julia Borja shares the profound importance of community that she experienced through Linangan sa Iloilo. Working primarily in isolation, focused on her own works in her own studio, being part of a community expanded her idea of what art is and what it can be. She discovered how important art is for others, not just for herself.

This realization inspired and excited Julia, giving her a different, broader, more expansive perspective and experience of art—one that is about connection and being part of a greater context. Linangan showed her that art thrives not in solitude alone, but in the networks of relationships that sustain and inspire creative practice.

Kate Angeline Tillo | Santa Barbara, Iloilo

Kate Angeline Tillo, an architecture student from Santa Barbara, was profoundly influenced by mentor Manny Garibay’s workshop on intuitive drawing. His advice resonated deeply: keep on drawing, even when you’re not in the mood or don’t know what to draw. Just keep drawing until something unexpected emerges—something that can develop into an authentic expression of who you are.

Kate credits Manny for helping her think more deeply about the art she creates and how she can be more herself through her work. She was also inspired and amazed by the mentors’ generosity—learning that even when they teach for free and receive nothing in return, they get to share their work and share of themselves. This lesson in selfless giving has deeply shaped Kate’s understanding of what it means to be part of an artistic community. Linangan has empowered her to express and articulate herself and her ideas more clearly through her art, discovering her authentic creative voice in the process.

Pong | Calumpang, Iloilo

Linangan sa Iloilo has helped Pong develop how he handles his materials and techniques, especially through tips from his mentors. The program taught him how to give form to his thoughts and visualize his ideas, allowing him to express himself more clearly and powerfully through his work. This newfound ability to translate internal vision into visual expression has transformed his artistic practice.

Yanni Ysabel | Iloilo City, Iloilo

For Yanni Ysabel, Linangan gave her a wider, more expansive understanding of what art can be. Before the program, she was primarily exposed to fine arts and visual arts. But Linangan expanded her definition and experience of art itself—revealing the art of conversation, the art of building community, and the art found in human connection.

The program helped Yanni affirm something profound: beyond life’s practicalities and the daily work of just surviving and getting things done, art and life are really about relationships. The things we learn simply by conversing with each other, being with each other, and exchanging ideas expand our sense of self. This realization has given her a deeper understanding of what it means to be an artist and to be herself—seeing art not as solitary creation but as building relationships, and seeing herself as part of that beautiful, interconnected web.

For Joshua Gabayeran, Linangan sa Iloilo expanded his understanding of what it means to create. He learned that art isn’t just a way to express himself—it’s also a way to create for and with communities. Joshua discovered that he need not be limited to what he currently knows or confine himself to personal expression alone.

After Linangan, he plans to connect with more local artists and fellow creatives, building not just connections but becoming an active part of the artist community in Iloilo.

Joshua also envisions creating art that promotes local craftsmanship, folk art making, and the rich traditions of his place. For him, art has become a bridge to collective creativity, cultural preservation, and shared purpose.

Jose Fraim Defacto Jr. | Pototan, Iloilo

Jose Fraim Defacto Jr. has truly learned to develop his style through Linangan sa Iloilo. He experimented with different mediums that his mentors introduced during feedback sessions and show-and-tell, pushing his practice in exciting new directions.

The mentoring he received inspired Fraim to give back to his own community. In Pototan, where there are hardly any artists offering mentoring or workshops, he looks forward to sharing what he knows with fellow artists, aspiring creatives, and even art students in colleges. As he continues to develop his art, Fraim is committed to teaching and nurturing the next generation of artists in his hometown.

Mimi Centino | Iloilo City, Iloilo
Before Linangan, Mimi Centino struggled with a difficult question: should she pursue a full-time art career or become an architect? At its core, it was a question of sustainability and career direction. Through the program, she learned that pursuing her passion in art must be balanced with practical sustainability options and discipline. To continue creating, she must find ways to sustain her practice. Linangan taught her that the key lies in balancing passion with career—allowing both her dreams and her livelihood to thrive together.

Jerome Fadrogane | Davao de Oro
A Fine Arts graduate from the University of Mindanao and a member of the Himugso Collective, Jerome Fadrogane found his most crucial takeaway from Linangan sa Iloilo in an unexpected place: character development.
Through his mentors’ guidance, Jerome learned that being an artist isn’t just about creating one impressive piece or accumulating achievements—it is fundamentally about who you are as a person. He discovered that how you carry yourself, your sense of discipline, and how your art reflects your beliefs matter just as much as the work itself.
This focus on character building pushed Jerome to go beyond his limits, exploring new possibilities in his medium and concepts. It became the catalyst for actualizing his full potential, transforming not just his work, but his entire approach to creative practice.

Mann Cayona | Tigbauan, Iloilo
Mann Cayona, a member of the Tagatig Art Group and vocalist of the band Trauma, credits his start as an artist to fellow Tigbauan local, Jzy Tilos. From Jzy, Mann discovered a foundational truth: being an artist means being true to yourself and staying authentic in your creative expression.
When Mann joined Linangan sa Iloilo as a self-taught artist, he arrived eager to absorb everything his mentors had to offer. For him, Linangan has been truly foundational—every mentor’s sharing, every detail, and every idea has changed how he thinks and shifted his perspective. Each session transforms his understanding of what it means to be an artist.
This constant evolution in thought and vision has made him a better artist, and he recognizes it as an invaluable gift to his creative journey.

Ken Cadenas | Leon, Iloilo

Ken Cadenas is a student artist already charting his path toward becoming a full-time creative. What left the deepest impression on him during Linangan was Otto Neri’s powerful talk, “Strike the Iron Until it Gets Hot.” This call to action urged Ken not to wait for perfect conditions or external validation, but to seize the moment and create his own momentum. By taking initiative now, Ken learned he can keep his creative fire burning bright and build the artistic practice he dreams of—one bold step at a time.

Kirby Guirhem Majaque | Iloilo City, Iloilo

Kirby Guirhem Majaque, a full-time self-taught artist, was profoundly moved by the wisdom shared by Linangan sa Iloilo veteran mentors Charlie Co and Renato “Ato” Habulan: only 10% of artists in each generation sustain long careers in the arts, and most who do make it succeed because of a supportive artistic community. This reality struck a chord with Kirby, revealing how vital it is for artists to uplift one another through the inevitable challenges of creative life.

As a self-taught artist, Kirby deeply understands the transformative power of having mentors and peers who provide feedback and help develop his work—it has been instrumental in his artistic growth. This experience inspired him not only to embrace the importance of giving back, but to actively share what he learns and develops as an artist, ensuring that others can benefit from the same support that has shaped his journey.
