In celebration of 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, we honor individuals whose extraordinary talents and unwavering dedication continue to preserve and elevate the richness of Filipino culture and identity. Among them is 𝐌𝐫. 𝐖𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐓𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐨 𝐋𝐚𝐲𝐮𝐠, a world-renowned Filipino master sculptor and painter whose artistry has brought distinction to Philippine sacred art on both national and international stages.
Hailing from the historic artistic community of Betis, Guagua, Pampanga, Mr. Layug is widely regarded as one of Asia’s most prolific ecclesiastical artists. Through decades of artistic excellence, he has masterfully fused indigenous Filipino craftsmanship with classical European influences, creating sacred works that embody both artistic excellence and deep cultural significance.
His remarkable achievements include receiving the prestigious Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, the highest papal honor bestowed upon the laity, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to ecclesiastical art. Among his distinguished works is the iconic image of Our Lady of Palo, used during Pope Francis’ historic 2015 Holy Mass in Tacloban, as well as the first Filipiniana-inspired altar dedicated to San Lorenzo Ruiz and Blessed Pedro Calungsod at the Pontificio Collegio Filippino in Rome. His artistry is likewise reflected in over 40 cathedral retablos and liturgical masterpieces across the Philippines.
Most recently, Mr. Layug completed the retablo and other liturgical furnishings for St. Rose Philippine Duchesne Church in Anthem, Arizona, with the blessing and dedication of the church held on May 13, 2026—a testament to the continuing global recognition of Filipino sacred artistry.
Beyond his artistic accomplishments, Mr. Layug remains deeply committed to safeguarding Pampanga’s cultural heritage as the founder of MASU (Mandukit at Artesano ning Sta Ursula). Established to unite local mandukit and artisans in Barangay Sta. Ursula, Betis, MASU serves as a platform for mentorship, cultural preservation, and artistic excellence. As its chief guiding master, Mr. Layug continues to mentor aspiring artists ensuring that the rich tradition and identity of Betis craftsmanship continue to thrive future generations.
