How long is too long to wait for a promise?
Everyone wants to graduate from somethingโnot just from classes, but also from versions of them that hold on too tightly. In Likas Teatroโs โDipLuma,โ graduation is stripped of its ceremony and retold as something heavier: graduation is not defined by medals and applause alone, for some, it is the end of the hope that has lingered for too long, or the weight lifted off of what was and what never came to be. On a stage meant for an ending, DipLuma showed that some endings arrive 20 years too late or too early, arriving before they can even begin.
Separate stories, but all seem to move along the same thread. This thread spells out: timing and assumption are the antagonists. One promise returned only to find reality had already moved on. Another proposal was rejected out of suspicion and fear. Even a friendship confused by gestures is misunderstood. In each story, the audience was left wondering.
โWhat if they had waited?โ
โWhat if they had asked?โ
In a plot where assumptions blurred reality, DipLuma was not about graduating from classes, but it was more about finally seeing clearly. As the spotlight lit up the whole auditorium and the applause of the students echoed, one truth lingered long after the curtain callโsometimes, the right people become the wrong ones, simply because time chose otherwise.
With that, Likas Teatro ended the play with โhindi lahat ng nakagraduate ay nakatoga, ang iba, malaya na.โ
