National Heritage Month (NHM) is annually celebrated by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) every May under Presidential Proclamation No. 439. This year's NHM theme, "Championing Heritage: Capacity Building to Transform Communities," honors the efforts of our cultural workers and advocates who have been striving to connect with various indigenous communities and help them showcase their ingenuity and creativity to mainstream media. With the support of the government, especially the NCCA, various laws have been institutionalized to safeguard our cultural heritage.
On May 16, 2024, the Culture and the Arts Office under the Student Services Office held a National Heritage Month celebration. The event was attended by Ma'am Ma. Andrea Patricia M. Millado, MBA, MA, President of Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges, Marbel Inc., along with Mr. Van Dominic Dati from the RMMC MI Culture and Arts Office. Also present were Sir Johann Sebastian M. Millado, MBA, RMMC GenSan's Executive Assistant for Admin and Finance, and Ma'am Salome L. Rocacurva, MLIS, the Library Director, together with the Library Staff. The event was filled with artistic performances by various socio-cultural groups such as the RMMC Himig Chorale, RMMC Sinag-laya, and RMMC Teatro Ambahanon.
The endorsement was led by the Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education (BCAEd) Program Director, Sir D.J. Brylle G. Silao, and Sir Ishmael G. Pantao, the BPeA faculty, on behalf of the Culture and Arts Officer, IDr. Leonardo Rey S. Carino. The Bachelor of Culture and Arts Education Program, in partnership with the Kuris Arts Guild, endorsed its artwork dubbed "Art Around Us" to the RMMC Library. This artwork is one of their outputs from the National Arts Month celebration in February 2024.
Additionally, the book BAHANDI was officially turned over to the Library and will be available in the Filipiniana Section once processed. This book is a project of the Cultural Center of the Philippines โ Cultural Exchange Department in partnership with Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges โ Marbel Inc. It features six creative forms of Mindanao deeply rooted in the folk life and traditions of indigenous communities: textile weaving, lakub, torogan, traditional music, bayok, and street dancing. One of the contributors is Mr. Leonardo Rey S. Carino, the Culture and Arts Officer.
These tangible materials will soon be available at the Filipiniana Section of the Library. Let's continue championing our heritage through opportunities that will transform our community.
