KOLOR NAN KULTURA HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN 🎨🌿

More than a painting competition, Kolor nan Kultura is a space for Siargaonon artists to tell stories of home through their own hands and perspectives.

Every canvas carries something worth remembering—our people, places, traditions, environment, everyday life, and memories of an island that continues to change.

Brushes are moving, colors are coming alive, and our artists are already turning these stories into works we hope to preserve through Bayay Nan Kultura—so they can be shared, remembered, and carried forward for generations to come.

Later, the celebration continues with live music, spoken poetry, open mic performances, and more expressions from our community.

Come witness the stories taking shape, support our artists, and celebrate a day of Siargaonon creativity and culture with us.

Because culture lives when people continue to create, remember, and tell their own stories.

Our stories. Our culture. Our island.

BEFORE IT BECAME A DESTINATION, IT ALREADY HAD A NAME.

DAPANAS.

For Lumad and local communities, place names are more than markers on a map. They carry memory, language, identity, and stories passed from one generation to another.

From this perspective, we share the concern surrounding Dapanas.

SIPA Community’s position is clear: we support efforts to recognize, document, and keep alive the local names and histories of Siargao’s places. We also believe that decisions involving public landmarks, tourism promotion, and culturally meaningful places are strongest when communities, elders, local authorities, and other stakeholders are able to listen to one another.

Our support for this conversation is not a rejection of tourism, development, or the people who worked on the existing signage. We recognize that these efforts may have been made with good intentions.

What we are asking for is space for local memory to be included.

We believe Dapanas deserves to be recognized and remembered, and that the concerns about the placement of the coastal sign deserve respectful review and community dialogue, particularly in relation to the natural landscape it was intended to celebrate.

For us, this goes beyond one sign.

It asks a larger question: As Siargao changes, how do we make sure the memories and identities already rooted in these places are not left behind?

Progress and preservation do not have to oppose each other. We believe they can move together when communities are heard and local history is respected.

We encourage everyone to read the petition in full, listen to the different perspectives surrounding it, and decide for themselves whether to support it.

This is not a call against change.

🎨 ARTISTS, READY YOUR CANVASES!

We’re counting down to KOLOR NAN KULTURA this September 20 at 10:00 AM at Siargao Nomad Cafe—and we have something exciting to announce. 🏆✨

CHAMPION NOW TAKES HOME ₱10,000 CASH!

Plus:
✍️ Special Edition Etchr Lab Landscape Sketchbook
🎟️ Special raffle surprises during the event for participants and spectators

Our warmest thanks to Siargao Nomads and Very Good Ice for helping us create more opportunities and recognition for our creative community.

But Kolor nan Kultura isn’t only about who takes home the prize.

We’re inviting artists to paint Siargao through their own perspective—our culture, people, environment, heritage, memories, community, and everyday island life.

🖼️ WHERE WILL THE PAINTINGS GO?

The finished works are intended to become part of SIPA Community’s growing cultural collection, with our goal of eventually preserving and exhibiting them through our future Bayay nan Kultura—a cultural home for Siargao’s art, stories, music, memories, and living traditions.

For oil paintings, larger canvases, and works needing extra drying time or special handling, we’ll coordinate directly with the artists for proper care and safekeeping.

🌿 WHY JOIN?

Come for the challenge, but also for the chance to be part of something bigger.

Meet and create alongside fellow artists. Share your own way of seeing Siargao. Have your work documented, connect with the creative community, and help give more space and visibility to local artists.

Every artist sees home differently. Your painting can hold a place, memory, tradition, landscape, or everyday moment that deserves to be remembered.

Through this growing collection, your work can become part of a bigger story—one we hope can be carried forward for the next generation.

Come create something that means something beyond competition day. 🌿

SALAMAT KARAJAW. 🤎🌿

As people of this island, we know that culture stays alive because people choose to carry it, support it, and make space for it.

A very special thank you to Very Good Ice , who has supported SIPA and our community work since day one. Your trust and continued support from the beginning mean so much to us.

Kultura Buhi was supported by Elena Buniel-Goss and DIRTI Coffee , whose generosity helped us create a space where local artists, stories, music, and culture could be seen, heard, and celebrated.

We also extend our gratitude to Siargao Nomads and our other sponsors and community supporters— 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 ☼ 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘆 , Café Ellyse, Generals Brew Siargao , Isla Natura Spa Siargao , Ocean Brew , and —for contributing in different ways to make this gathering possible.

Proceeds from Kultura Buhi will help support SIPA’s continuing cultural preservation initiatives and our vision for Bayay nan Kultura—a community space where stories, traditions, creativity, learning, and local knowledge can continue to be shared and passed on.

In an island that continues to change, support like this helps create spaces where local communities, artists, elders, and young people can gather, remember, create, and continue sharing the culture and knowledge passed through generations.

We remain open to ongoing support, partnerships, and collaboration with individuals, businesses, organizations, institutions, and communities who believe in keeping Siargao’s living culture visible, valued, and carried forward.

From the SIPA Community, salamat karajaw for believing in this work and for walking with us. 🤎

Our first gathering for KULTURA BUHI 🌿

Tingog nan Kultura brought us together for an evening of music, stories, culture, and community—a celebration of our identity and culture as something living, evolving, and carried forward by the community.

It was an honor to have Zandro C. Urbiztondo with us, one of the artists who helped give Surigaonon stories a home in music. For decades, his songs have carried pieces of our history, places, language, and everyday life. His work reminds us that music is more than entertainment, it can hold memory, speak for our connection to the land, and help keep our language, culture, and heritage alive.

To our artists, sponsors, volunteers, partners, and everyone who joined us—salamat karajaw! 🤎

From voices and songs, we now move to colors and canvas. 🎨

On September 20, Kultura Buhi continues with KOLOR NAN KULTURA: On-the-Spot Painting Competition at Siargao Nomad Cafe & Workspace

Calling our island artists to share through their canvas a glimpse of our culture as they see it, know it, remember it, or experience it today—through memory, tradition, home, and island life.
