It takes a while for me to take in the changes that the Belltower is going through. I will be honest and say that I loved it the way it was, the gray stone finish. Being one of the oldest structures in the city, it lived up to that fact.

Then it turned to white and I had to accept it. And now there are dark wooden planks added to the bell chamber, which I’m not so keen on (see last photo).

Anyway. I wanted to create this angle that I really like from a photo I took. It’s the view where three tall palm trees are visible on the right. I attached my paper to an old wood slice before I drew the lines and painted in watercolors. I like how it turned out!

~ An honor to be chosen to create the artwork for this year”s Dumaguete Literary Festival!

This is “Dumaguete Literary Life” and it features some of our city’s icons and landmarks, the Belltower, the Boulevard, the Presidencia, the Pedicab and Mount Talinis in the background.

The home of the event is Arts and Design Collective (ADCD) , a heritage house located along 58 EJ Blanco Street. It runs from April 17-20, 2026. Visit their page for the full schedule of events.

Ever heard of Asin Tibuok?

Also called “Dinosaur egg salt”, it’s a rare, traditional sea salt from Bohol, shaped like a small clay “egg.” But what really makes it special is how it’s made. The process takes months. Seawater is slowly filtered through coconut husk ash, then boiled for hours in clay pots until it hardens into solid salt.

The result is a rich, smoky, slightly sweet flavor you won’t get from regular salt.

Only a few families still make it today, which is why it’s considered an endangered heritage food. And recently, this traditional method was recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage worth preserving.

More than just salt, it’s a quiet piece of Filipino history still being made by hand 🤍

“Sorbetes”is our favorite “dirty ice cream” which isn’t actually dirty but is called such because it’s peddled in the streets in colorful carts. I personally love it! 🍦

I’m making a short series where I take our favorite local snacks - re-imagined as places. I call it “Food Stories.”
