“Magdaragilon,” the Hiligaynon term for “murmur” or “noise,” is a collection of images that are direct and artful reflection of what happens in Delmo’s mind when he is deep asleep. “I’m personally affected by everything happening in the world today that is why I absorb them subconsciously,” explains the visual artist. “It is not just the sounds, but also the thoughts.”

With his experience as a production designer at many local festivals, he married that carnivalesque aesthetic with the spirit of folklore and the natural beauty of flora and fauna, producing artworks that are full of fantasy.

Exhibition poster for “This is Fine…Art” an exhibition with 14 participating artists - Alburoto, Andres, Gelo Cinco, Christian Culangan, RC RC, Mac Eparwa, Bam Garibay, Lance Gomez, Lawrence Marcos, Roger Mond, Jehu Pascua, seeweirdo, Kevin Roque, and Kirk Tabanera.

The artists respond not only to the circumstances in which they create, but also the effects and limitations imposed on them. The world is experiencing tumultuous times brought about by multiple factors such as a pandemic, global conflicts, and energy crises. The month of March has also ushered in several local art fairs, commercial opportunities for creatives that consequently add more pressure for them. Curiosity about how artists perceive themselves has led to the central queries of the show, which was “How do you see yourself?” and “How do you cope”?

Killing Time is an exhibit born out of needles. When thinking of what to present with Kirk, we thought about how we work with processes of pastimes. Here is our attempt at turning public perception of embroidery and tattooing on its head.

Exhibition design for “Strangers in a Strange Land” a solo show by Nina Garibay at Vinyl on Vinyl

This collection of paintings by Nina Garibay explores  the speculative scenario of an unfamiliar homeland. Like a guileless alien emissary getting the lay of the land, she uses snippets and silhouettes from magazine collages to create a working narrative of the daunting milieu. Ubiquitous clouds and endless floors ground the outlandish characters who are either shrouded in mystery or missing, recognizable only by their exaggerated poses or the negative space that surrounds them.

Garibay guides us through this alternate reality by treating the canvas like a window to different story arcs, keeping us behind a safe, albeit symbolic barrier.

“All men have the stars but they are not the same things for different people. For some, who are travelers, the stars are guides. For others they are no more than little lights in the sky. For others, who are scholars, they are problems. For businessmen they were wealth. But all these stars are silent.

You–you alone–will have the stars as no one else has them–”

 - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

During February, we commemorate the EDSA People Power Revolution, a hallmark of nonviolent protest in Philippine history that led to the Marcoses leaving the country. The Filipino's love for freedom transcended hate, pain, and violence in coming together.

For this exhibit the artists were asked to respond to the challenge of what they think is worth fighting for in the current times. Loving takes work, time, and dedication. It demands selflessness and cooperation.

Painted with instinctually erratic brushstrokes and purposefully garish colors, Tabanera’s characters are engaged in the throes of a violent spectacle, whether as a participant or enraptured viewer. A flurry of simultaneous action makes it difficult to look away. He carries over the domineering energy of his past oeuvre composed of monochromatic charcoal drawings of a gritty and unforgiving Manila, his city of origin, with its plenty wildly vibrant personas and channels it into this allegorical undertaking of the upcoming national elections.

For two parallel worlds, the present is a time of much cheering and jeering amongst the public. A setting gilded with gold, the metallic clanging of weaponry, and jostling of bodies assault the senses on one hand, while tapestries and caravans with names in bold text roam the roads of the other. Transporting us to a place reminiscent of a different time, Kirk Tabanera constructs a fictional narrative for his first solo exhibition titled Pitmaster.

Perhaps in crossing between these worlds, one recalls Juan Luna’s Spoliarium. Painted a little more than a century ago, just as in the present, the country was wrought in the consummation of violence. The slow dragging of the slain gladiator’s form against the earth develops a certain callousness in the crowd, and their dispersal signals the conclusion of merriment. What is left of that cycle are mangled bodies and weeping families of the fallen. The pitmaster engineers the descent of the populace into depraved tendencies akin to theirs. A united front to break our fall into another bout of this age-old infighting, having witnessed its repercussions, would make for a more progressive cause for celebration.

Waking up beside electronic gadgets is now a mundane reality. Thumbs slide around screens and scroll whilst gathering thoughts, occasionally tapping and swiping. Brightness against a palm becomes the first thing to be seen, even before the sun. They serve as a window to the world in our hands. As the world continues to become increasingly digital, traversing it requires the imagination of living simultaneously in the virtual and the real.

Relentlessly, stories will pop up and then go on to expire after 24 hours. Every day we scroll down and sink into the seafloor, not wanting to miss out on what is still yet to happen. As we fall into a deep slumber, we are haunted by the thought that tomorrow we will have to choose to resurface as our old selves, or as someone new.
