Well, it's because of British doctor, Sir Ronald Ross's trailblazing discovery in 1897 20th of August that female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans.

We commemorate this day not because it's merely for the mosquitoes alone, but because it marks a groundbreaking discovery that contributes to the modern knowledge of medicine and shapes the world view towards mosquitoes possible effect to humans to even todayโ€”this commemoration's objectives and means are to give awareness and continues to acknowledge Dr. Ronald Ross's contribution in the medical world.
