Poro, Cebu – A recent report has revealed that the Municipality of Poro has the highest number of Job Order (JO) employees among all third-class municipalities in Cebu, even surpassing the first-class municipality of San Francisco in Camotes Islands.

The report shows that while first-class San Francisco has around a hundred JOs, Poro has over 500 JOs, despite its lower income classification and budget limitations. This raises concerns about whether the municipality is overspending on personnel costs, leaving fewer funds for essential public services and development projects.

According to the latest audit, Poro’s LGU has dedicated more than 55% of its budget to salaries and wages, a figure that may have exceeded the recommended ceiling under Department of Budget and Management (DBM) regulations. This finding has sparked questions on the municipality’s financial priorities, as other third-class municipalities typically allocate a more balanced portion of their funds for infrastructure, healthcare, and social welfare programs.

Despite this, Mayor Edgar Rama defended the high number of JOs, stating that hiring more locals is part of his commitment to provide jobs and livelihood opportunities.

The LGU of Poro continues to hire more Job Order (JO) workers, a move that many observers have noted is increasing as the election draws near. With an already high number of JOs in the municipality, the growing workforce remains a topic of discussion among residents.

Poro, Cebu – March 14, 2025 – The Municipal Government of Poro has suspended classes at all levels today, March 14, 2025, due to inclement weather conditions affecting the town.

Local authorities announced the suspension early this morning, citing heavy rains and strong winds that pose potential safety risks to students and teachers. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) continues to monitor the weather situation and has advised residents to stay alert for further updates.

“We are prioritizing the safety of our students and school personnel. With the unpredictable weather, it is best to suspend classes to avoid any untoward incidents,” said Mayor Gary Rama.

Parents and students are urged to stay indoors and remain vigilant as weather disturbances continue. Updates on the resumption of classes will be announced once conditions improve.

Poro, Cebu – March 14, 2025 – In a bold display of personal commitment to education and youth empowerment, Mayor Gary Rama of Poro has taken matters into his own hands—literally—by using his own personal funds to distribute cash assistance to the Ayuda PRIDE Scholars.

"Education is the key to success, and the key to education is giving them money assistance,” he declared. The Ayuda program, now recognized as a flagship initiative under Mayor Gary’s leadership, is designed to ease the financial burden on students and to reward academic excellence with tangible support. His decision to personally fund the aid has resonated deeply within the community, reinforcing his commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders in Poro.

The Hague, Netherlands – March 14, 2025 – Former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte made his initial appearance before the International Criminal Court (ICC) Pre-Trial Chamber 1 on Friday, March 14, just two days after his high-profile arrest related to his administration’s war on drugs.

The hearing was presided over by the same three female judges who had earlier issued the arrest warrant against Duterte: Presiding Judge Iulia Antoanella Motoc, Judge Reine Adélaïde Sophie Alapini-Gansou, and Judge María del Socorro Flores Liera. Their presence underscores the continuity of the ICC’s judicial process in addressing the serious allegations stemming from Duterte’s tenure.

During the brief proceedings, the court addressed preliminary matters as part of the process leading up to a full trial. Legal representatives for Duterte acknowledged the charges but maintained that their client would contest the allegations vigorously.

The case, which centers on Duterte’s administration’s controversial war on drugs and the thousands of deaths attributed to it, has attracted intense international scrutiny. Human rights groups and international legal experts are closely monitoring developments, as the proceedings could have far-reaching implications for accountability in the Philippines and beyond.

With the absence of the Sangguniang Bayan of Poro from the list of winners, questions arose about why the town was not recognized. In response, officials of the Poro SB downplayed the significance of the awards, emphasizing that true service is felt by the people—not measured by paperwork.

“Dili kinahanglan ang award para mailhan nga nagserbisyo. Ang among buhat dili lang makita sa papeles, pero gibati sa katawhan sa ilang adlaw-adlaw nga panginahanglan,” VM Dina, SB Chairman stated.

They stressed that their focus remains on delivering direct service rather than competing for recognition.

“Mas importante nga ang katawhan makakita ug makapahimulos sa among serbisyo kaysa mopatigbabaw lang sa dokumento,” another official added.

Despite the LLA Sugbo 2025 awards highlighting legislative excellence, Poro’s local officials remain steadfast in their belief that genuine leadership is measured by the positive impact felt by their constituents—beyond what is written on paper.

TAIWAN – Vice Mayor Dina Rama, who is in Taiwan for a vacation, took time to visit the Rama High Scholars studying at Shu-Te University.

The scholarship program, launched last year, granted ten deserving students from Luciano B. Rama Sr. Memorial National High School the opportunity to study in Taiwan. These scholars were selected based on their academic excellence and leadership potential. The Shu-Te University scholarship program aims to provide financial assistance and international learning opportunities for deserving students.

While primarily in Taiwan for her travel goals, VM Dina made a brief stop to check in on the scholars, expressing her support and encouragement.

The scholars expressed their gratitude for the visit, saying it was a morale boost as they continue their studies abroad.

“Pamilyang GarDin (Gary and Dina) is proud of our scholars. Proud kami nga napada namo sila sa Taiwan. Magpadayon lang mo kay nagpaabot ang Poro kaninyo,” VM Dina shared.

PORO, Cebu – As the election season approaches, the local government of Poro, Cebu, has ramped up its efforts to ensure public safety by upgrading and expanding its CCTV surveillance system across key areas in town. The initiative aims to deter crime, monitor public spaces, and provide additional security for residents, especially during the highly anticipated campaign period.
