SPLIT! is a stage play written by Leigh Alipo-on and directed by Sofia Allison. Imagine the theme of the 90’s hit Filipino TV series ‘Mara Clara’ fused with the iconic teen movie ‘Clueless’. How do you think that would play off? Well the answer is SPLIT!

From the moment the curtains opened, we saw two friends, Celine played by Hans Bacus and Diane played by Yezabelle Quinapondan, sitting on the couch while assembling their friendship bracelets together. With that scene itself and the conversation unfolding between Celine and Diane, you were already shown the unbalanced power dynamic of the friendship. That scene itself solidified and hooked you as an audience. How will this friendship work? What will happen to their friendship now Celine will be going to school with Diane?

When we move from scene to scene with SPLIT, it really felt like you were watching a movie with the way each scene seamlessly transitioned to the next. Each scene truly elevated the experience and the charm of the show. The technicalities of the show were also very significant, I’ve noticed some of the music used perfectly fit its corresponding scene. Hans and Yezabelle’s chemistry as best friends was undeniably an excellent interpretation of the characters. I would also like to highlight Hans’ undeniably downright acting, how she consolidated her sincerity as a loyal friend and how she was able to receive the delivery of Yezabelle’s character. It was noteworthy.

I would also like to commend a scene that I have been swooning over and over again, the scene where Diane delivered a monologue about how she was overly reacting to Cece's gained popularity at school. Diane went to Cece’s house trying to fix everything but she overheard things from the other side of the door. With Yezabelle’s perfectly construed performance in that scene, she deliberately embodied betrayal and disappointment. It was that simple scene that made me realize the glorious moment that SPLIT gave on stage. Another pivotal moment of the show was the plot twist during the confrontation scene at the quiz bowl; it was a moment that was chivalrous yet avoided being overly dramatic.

SPLIT gave us a powerful and empowering glimpse into female friendships and sisterhood without being too preachy and on the nose. The show didn’t need to be gimmicky or make us uncomfortable just to prove a point. A celebration of life, of downfalls, of trying to be a better person and ending in a major plot twist of both characters being sisters. The show didn’t need catfights to emphasize tensions, you can see it all in the eyes of Yezabelle. What I admire about this show is that the audience was truly there to sit back and enjoy the show.

𝟱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝟱 𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗧𝗘𝗡 𝗣𝗢𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗢𝗘𝗦. We cannot deny the charm and wit we felt when we watched SPLIT, how the writers were able to extract both theme’s elements while still being true to their narrative, and how they showcased the empowerment of making mistakes just being young. It was not asking for too much but was giving us so much more than just drama. SPLIT was created based on iconic themes, but little did they know, they produced something ICONIC!

Dear Split,

We were amazing and we were so fun. I loved every bit of this journey we all had together. From the trials and errors we had from the beginning, we shaped something even better than just a successful play — a bond that solidified us, a bond I’m sure we will never forget.

Even when bombarded with school works, we still worked hard to be at our best in everything. We still had teamwork and unity, and it is something I am always proud to have in our group.

To the writers, especially the Head writer, Leigh, I am so grateful for your brilliant minds, I wish I could kiss your brains. You guys were able to create a story that was creative, dramatic, and fun. You made the play an enjoyable experience for the audience and even for me, the director. It felt like a movie, and it never made me feel bored. You guys were able to craft a story that brought sparkles and fun to life. A very good mix of American Movie Culture and Filipino Drama Television. You know damn well it’s a Filipino drama when there’s SO MUCH drama. And, who doesn’t like a 90’s cliche, am I right? You guys were just so creative in your writing throughout all acts, making sure every bit of dialogue was well made. And with those dialogues, we now bring the characters to life.

To the actors, you have no idea how proud I am of all of you. You are a talented bunch that I was very lucky to work with. The story wouldn’t have been executed so well if it weren’t for all of you. Main actors, supporting actors, and even the extras! You did a good job of bringing the characters to life. And just as Hans and Yeza felt, once the curtains opened, they forgot about the audience, and they became Diane and Celine. Being an actor is one great privilege of bringing art to life, you were able to show these characters to the real world, making them better and even becoming part of them.

To Geo, I am so glad you made Dmitri true to life just as how me and the writers envisioned it. You were able to steal everyone’s hearts onstage and even behind the scenes. To our ultimate face card in the group, I am very proud of every bit of your performance.

To Ryan and Jennifer, an amazing duo characters that were created, Jesh and Aicelle embodied these two important supporting characters well. You guys made your characters pop off with so much color, bringing radiant vibes whenever you’re on stage. You guys were absolutely gorJesh.

To Shareez, you were a perfect fit for the one and only Ms. Lisa Blair. You were not just a regular mom, but a cool mom. Though you were shy at times, you went to the stage and brought the mom we wanted, to life. I am very happy to see you own this character.

To Dandy, I am very proud of what you were able to give on stage. In all honesty, we had no clear vision of what Mr. Grant would look like. But once you got the role, you started molding this character and made him into you. Cheater diay ka dandy hala kaaa!! Charing. You did your dad voice so well don’t worry about it, your ass is getting dad of the year! Best dad acting fr.

And to Yeza and Hans,Yeza, I am just speechless of all the things that you can do, you are just so talented that I never doubted you throughout the process. You hold so much power and talent, that you can bring the very best in everything. It is like your Midas Touch. And you did, with the character that you excellently brought to life. Every scene was filled with pure talent, from every facial expression, and every eye roll, you played Diane so well. I will always be in awe of your beauty inside and out. This character will live on forever as you carry her with you. I am so so so proud of you.

Hans, I am just so grateful to you. I am so happy to see you shine and be onstage and do so well in playing a character that resembles you. You have really fully come out of your shell you shy and quiet girl!!! I am so proud of you. You did nothing but ate the role up. You and I guided each other throughout all of this and I am so thankful for that. And again, you did an excellent job bringing Celine to life. You showed us how incredible and capable you will always be. Through this character, we were able to showcase the cliche of the makeover of Celine, but also to you Hans. You have become the best version of yourself and I hope you know that. And one thing about the both of you, Hans and Yeza, was that you were able to mirror your characters to your real personality. And being immersed in the characters meant so much more than just performing them, it also meant that you had fun and you actually liked what you were doing, and that was the most important bit.

To the Props team, Caryll, John, Dexter, and Maria, I salute every one of you for being so cooperative in everything. And biggest thanks to the props head, David Goopio for managing the props and its team. From making and providing the props to the actual stage blockings. Throughout the play, you guys made every transition clean and well done. I could surely say that the last-minute stage blocking practices really paid off. I thank all of you for your diligence, it really lifted up our play.

To Aya, our poster maker and hair & makeup, and part of the marketing team, I am so happy about what you have done. From our amazing poster, it was so fitted for Split and no one else would have edited it better. You brought the sparkles and beauty in our play from the very first poster until the day we dolled up our actors. Thank you for making the play extra extra beautiful.

To the tech team, which consists of one person, Theo Aripin. I am so proud of how the music went and we did so great. It was fun being able to create an ambiance perfectly fitted for the scenes of the play with the music. The music also was one of the backbones of the play, and I am glad you were able to execute it well. You did a great job tech team.

To the crazy marketing team, especially the head, Jesh. I am so thankful for you and every initiative you took throughout all the promotions. Your brilliant and creative minds had every right to be loud both in real life and on social media. I can really say the promotions paid off, and I had fun collaborating with you guys for every post we did. Marketing team, we are natural clout chasers, charot. We were able to proudly promote our play and that was the best part of it.

This play, this semester, it was a roller coaster ride for all of us. But it’s also a core memory that we will be carrying with us. What a fun memory to be added during our last year in high school. We will be bringing this experience with us as we move forward to the future. We learned so much from this play, and I hope we will be able to use Split as an inspiration. Remember that scene in Inside Out? Where Joy lets Riley dream about her happiest memories? I think that the Joy in my head will flash our Split journey whenever I dream. Split is a bundle of joy, I’m glad it exists. And guess what? We made Split and it is a reminder that we did great things and that we were capable of producing something amazing, together — always! I don’t see Split as the play we did, but I see Split as the people who were part of it. So dearest Split, pat yourselves on the back, you did good and all your efforts paid off. It was fun getting to know each one of you better, forming bonds, and forming friendships. And to those who took every opportunity to capture every moment of our journey, I thank you for doing so. We will look back years from now, and we will always be Split! together. We made this, this is ours and will forever be ours.

Truly proud of us Split, full of love right now… see you around Split.

xoxo,
Sofia Allison, Split! Director

𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐦 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤. (𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧)
A slam book is a notebook (commonly the spiral-bound type) that is passed among children and teenagers. The keeper of the book starts by posting a question (which may be on any subject) and the book is then passed around for each contributor to fill in their own answer to the question.

Fun fact: It was named "slam book" because when a teacher would come near, the book would be slammed shut and covered with homework, papers, or other appropriate camouflage.

Get to know the people behind In this slambook style introduction, here’s everything you need to know about them! From the main cast to the production crew, this will surely take you back to the glittery and creative era of the 90s! This play will serve as a core memory for all of us so, might as well keep it in a digital "slambook".

See you all this Friday, December 15, 2023, 8:00 AM at the USC SC's Jaschik Hall. Don't miss out on the iconic 90's inspired play!
