In the humid mountains of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Colombia) lives Cryptobatrachus boulengeri, a frog as curious as its name suggests: the “backpack frog”. Here, the females do not lay eggs in the water like most frogs. After mating, the fertilized eggs stick firmly to the mother’s back and develop there until they become fully formed little frogs, without going through the free-swimming tadpole stage. The young feed on the egg as they grow, and only a few days after being born they start hunting insects on their own.

This reproductive mode, called direct development, is an evolutionary strategy that reduces predation risks and facilitates survival in humid environments that lack still waters.
